Staff Positions
Paid and Volunteer for 2023-2024 School Year
Positions are available for energetic, responsible students with good computer skills who work well with others and want to become more involved in college life, learn work-related skills, build an impressive resume and be part of a winning team. Previous media experience would be helpful but is not required.
Editor-in-chief (1) and Managing Editors (3)—Floyd Campus
The editor-in-chief oversees the print and online SMP and will receive approx. $3,100 per academic year. The managing editors will each receive approx. $2,900 per academic year. The editor-in-chief and managing editors will work with content and layout and design for the print publication and with the outline publication. Each managing editor will specialize in one of these areas: sports, online, design and graphics. Applicants must have the following qualifications: (1) Excellent computer skills and good basic writing skills (2) Free time in the afternoons and an additional 9 nights fall semester and 12 nights spring semester to work on page layout, and (3) A minimum 2.2 GPA for returning students.
Assistant Online Editor—Floyd Campus
The assistant online editor and will work with the online managing editor to gather, write, edit and post articles and photos from the various GHC locations as well as monitor activity at the SMP website and maintain the SMP Facebook page. He or she will receive approx. $900 per academic year.
Chief Photographer—Floyd Campus
The chief photographer coordinates photo staff assignments, keeps track of photo equipment, takes photos, and files permission slips. He or she also prepares the photos for use in print or online by processing digital images and scanning art. The chief photographer archives digital images and helps prepare additional photos and videos for online posting. The chief photographer receives approx. $1,700 per academic year.
Advertising Manager—Floyd Campus
The advertising manager sells ads, coordinates ad sales, designs ads, coordinates ad layout, handles billing, and keeps office records. The advertising manager receives a base salary of approx. $800 per academic year plus up to 25 percent commission on collected ad revenue.
Assistant Sports Editor—Cartersville Campus
The assistant sports editor takes the lead in covering Cartersville intramural sports and GHC’s intercollegiate softball and baseball teams and receives approx. $800 per academic year.
Assistant Ad Manager—Cartersville Campus
The assistant ad manager helps sell ads in the Cartersville area. The assistant ad manager receives 25 percent commission on ads personally sold.
Campus Coordinator—Cartersville, Paulding, and Marietta campuses
The campus coordinators will handle SMP distribution and promotion at their individual campuses and submit story ideas to ensure that each campus is well covered. Coordinators receive approx. $50 per academic year.
Ad Salespeople—All campuses
The ad salespeople are paid a 15 percent commission on collected revenue for ads personally sold.
News Writers, Feature Writers, Sports Writers, Artists (cartoonists/illustrators/graphic designers), and Photographers. Though unpaid, these positions provide an excellent opportunity to be involved in an important college activity, to gain valuable work-related experience and skills, and to enhance a resume. Most SMP staff members hold these positions.
