Strong Start: New Part-Time Faculty Orientation

New part-time faculty are invited to join us for a brief orientation to discuss the basics of teaching at GHC. We will also explore best practices of instructional strategies. You will get a change to talk to your Chairs in a breakout session.

Part-Time Faculty Learning Community
Fall and Spring Semester | Approx. 1 meeting per month | Teams | Facilitator: Bridget Tweedy
This Faculty Learning Community (FLC) is provided for our Part-Time faculty. The group will discuss issues that you experience as a part-time member of the community, teaching and learning instructional strategies, and logistical issues, as well. The community supports each other through these monthly meetings. Additional guests may attend throughout the academic year.
Artificial Intelligence - Faculty Learning Community (FULL)
Fall and Spring Semester | Approx. 1 meeting per month | Teams | Facilitator: Tom Harnden, Professor of Biology
This Faculty Learning Community (FLC) will focus on Artificial Intelligence. The FLC will read the book The Opposite of Cheating: Teaching for Integrity in the Age of AI. Professor Harnden will lead the group in applying the concepts to your courses. The FLC will meet approximately once a month in both fall and spring semester. Professor Harnden, with the help of CETL, will arrange the time and dates as well as establish any deliverables for the FLC. Once you register for this FLC, you will be sent the book and the facilitator will contact you.
Pedagogy of Kindness - Faculty Learning Community (FULL)

This Faculty Learning Community (FLC) will focus on kindness and connections in the classroom. The FLC will read the book The Pedagogy of Kindness: Teaching, Engaging, and Thriving in Higher Education. The facilitator will lead the group in applying the concepts of kindness to your courses. The FLC will meet approximately once a month in both fall and spring semester. The facilitator, with the help of CETL, will arrange the time and dates as well as establish any deliverables for the FLC. Once you register for this FLC, you will be sent the book and the facilitator will contact you.
Distracted Learners - Faculty Learning Community (FULL)
Fall and Spring Semester | Approx. 1 meeting per month | Teams | Facilitator: Ejiro Ogaga, Assistant Professor of Biology
This Faculty Learning Community (FLC) will focus on kindness and connections in the classroom. The FLC will read the book Distracted: Why Students Can't Focus and What You Can Do About It. The facilitator will lead the FLC group in discussing way to improve student engagement in the classroom and online. This book provides strategies for reducing cognitive overload while "freeing up students' minds to to concentrate." The FLC will meet approximately once a month in both fall and spring semester. The facilitator, with the help of CETL, will arrange the time and dates as well as establish any deliverables for the FLC. Once you register for this FLC, you will be sent the book and the facilitator will contact you.
YuJa Panorama Overview

Is Generative AI a helper to assist with your teaching? Is it a threat to student learning? How can the realities of higher ed instruction in an AI-enabled world encourage us to rethink our pedagogy to align with our values? Join us for a one-week, mostly asynchronous online exploration of how generative AI works, how instructors have tackled it in their own teaching, and what might be possible for you. This one-week lab should take approximately 4 hours to complete.
Copyright in the Classroom: Leveraging Open Educational Resources in Your Courses

Imagine the following scenario: At the last minute, you’re asked to teach a course you’re unfamiliar with. You do have some materials from a colleague, as well as some learning activities you find online. You think some of the materials may be from a textbook, so you are not sure if you can reuse them. This session will tell you everything you need to know about copyright and educational fair use, Creative Commons licensing, and how to leverage this knowledge as you prepare materials for your classes! Workshop objectives:
- Apply the principles of copyright to open educational resources.
- Apply educational fair use practices.
- Recognize the differences in Creative Commons licenses.
- Integrate open educational resources appropriately into your courses.
