Journalism
What can you do with a Journalism Degree?
Georgia Highlands has much to offer journalism students through both coursework and extracurricular involvement in writing, layout and design, art, photography, desk-top publishing, and computer graphics by working with the Six Mile Post, our award-winning print and online student news organization.
Many SMP staff members build their portfolios through paid or volunteer positions as editors, writers, photographers and campus coordinators representing each of our five campus locations. Our program offers the advantage that no prior experience is required, and no prerequisite course work is needed to begin. Students may be a part of something larger than themselves from day one!
Membership and Travel Opportunities
The Six Mile Post is a member of:
- Georgia College Press Association (GCPA)
- Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI)
- Associated Collegiate Press (ACP)
We believe that exposure to the national efforts of collegiate journalists and networking with professionals is integral to a strong academic experience. Student journalists are encouraged to travel to annual conferences with their peers and faculty adviser, run for offices within these organizations, compete with other colleges, and give presentations of their work.
Journalism Pathway Required Courses:
- COMM 1110 Public Speaking
- COMM 2101 Writing for Digital Media
- COMM 2230 Introduction to Mass Media
At GHC, students can take the first two years of the journalism core, leading to an associate of arts degree and easily transfer to a four-year college to complete a bachelor’s degree in communication or journalism with specialization in print or broadcast journalism, advertising, or public relations.
