Exempting Learning Support

Placement into Learning Support courses is based upon various student qualifications as listed below.  If you were placed into Learning Support and are interested in taking the Accuplacer Placement Test for possible re-evaluation of placement, please contact GHC Testing at testing@highlands.edu, 706-204-2110, or testing.highlands.edu.

English Learning Support Placement

Students are placed into ENGL 1101 and ENGL 0999 if they do not meet one of the following qualifications:

  • High School GPA of 2.7 or higher.
  • ACT English or Reading score of 17 or higher.
  • SAT Verbal/Critical Reading score of 430 or higher on the "old" SAT (prior to 2016).
  • SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) section score of 480 or higher on the "new" SAT (since 2016).
  • Accuplacer Next-Generation Reading score of 237 or higher AND an Accuplacer WritePlacer score of 4 or higher.
  • Classic Accuplacer Reading Comprehension score of 61 or higher AND an Accuplacer WritePlacer score of 4 or higher.
  • English Placement Index (EPI) of 4230 or higher.

Mathematics Learning Support Placement

Quantitative Reasoning/Statistics Pathway

Students are placed into either MATH 1001 and MATH 0997 OR STAT 1401 and STAT 0996 OR MATH 1101 and MATH 0998 if they do not meet one of the following qualifications:

  • High School GPA of 3.1 or higher.
  • ACT Math score of 17 or higher.
  • SAT Math score of 400 or higher on the "old" SAT (prior to 2016).
  • SAT Math section score of 440 or higher on the "new" SAT (since 2016).
  • Accuplacer Next-Generation Mathematics score of 258 or higher.
  • Classic Accuplacer Mathematics score of 67 or higher.
  • Mathematics Placement Index (MPI) of 1165 or higher.

Calculus Pathway

Students are placed into either MATH 1001 and MATH 0997 OR STAT 1401 and STAT 0996 OR MATH 1101 and MATH 0998 if they do not meet one of the following qualifications:

  • High School GPA of 3.1 or higher.
  • ACT Math score of 17 or higher.
  • SAT Math score of 400 or higher on the "old" SAT (prior to 2016).
  • SAT Math section score of 440 or higher on the "new" SAT (since 2016).
  • Accuplacer Next-Generation Mathematics score of 258 or higher.
  • Classic Accuplacer Mathematics score of 67 or higher.
  • Mathematics Placement Index (MPI) of 1165 or higher.

Students are placed into MATH 1111 and MATH 0999 if they do not have a qualification that exceeds any of the following ranges:

  • High School GPA of 3.1 or higher but below 3.2.
  • ACT Math score of 17 or higher but below 20.
  • SAT Math section score of 440 or higher but below 510 on the "new" SAT (since 2016).
  • SAT Math score of 400 or higher but below 470 on the "old" SAT (prior to 2016).
  • Accuplacer Next-Generation Mathematics score of 258 or higher but below 269.
  • Classic Accuplacer Mathematics score of 67 or higher but below 79.
  • Mathematics Placement Index (MPI) of 1165 or higher but below 1265.

 

Students that place out of Learning Support may elect to take the appropriate co-requisite with the credit-level course.  Students should submit the Learning Support Volunteer Form found under Forms and Procedures.

 

Placement Test Preparation

Placement Test Preparation is offered to prospective and current GHC students.
