Learning Support Requirements
Learning Support Rules
Policies from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG) govern Learning Support programs at all USG schools with limited adjustment by Georgia Highlands College. The following policies are most important to Learning Support students.
- Students must enroll for Learning Support courses first. During each semester of enrollment any student (full or part-time) must first register for all required Learning Support courses before being allowed to register for other courses.
- Students should complete Learning Support Courses in a timely manner. Students who have accumulated 30 or more credit hours and have not successfully completed Gateway Courses in both mathematics and English may only register for the required Gateway and co-requisite courses.
- Students who are required to register for co-requisite courses (ENGL 0999, MATH/STAT 0996, MATH 0997, MATH 0998, or MATH 0999) along with associated credit courses (ENGL 1101, MATH/STAT 1401, MATH 1001, MATH 1101, or MATH 1111) may only withdraw from both courses. Withdrawal from only one of the two courses, either the co-requisite course or the credit course, is not permitted.
- Students in co-requisite courses that do not pass their associated college level course must sign up for both the college level course and its co-requisite the next semester regardless of their grade in the co-requisite class.
- Students fulfill their Learning Support requirements with the successful completion of the Gateway course for a particular area, ENGL 1101 for English and MATH 1001, MATH 1111, or MATH/STAT 1401 for mathematics.
Waiving Learning Support Requirements
During each semester of enrollment, students must first register for all required corequisite Learning Support courses and paired collegiate courses before being allowed to register for other courses. This policy also applies to part-time students. Two exceptions are possible:
- Students requiring Learning Support in both English and Mathematics may defer enrollment in corequisite Learning Support and the accompanying collegiate courses in one area, but must be continuously enrolled in one or both until the college-level courses have been passed. In cases where students cannot take courses in both Learning Support areas simultaneously, enrollment in ENGL 1001 with corequisite Learning Support should take priority. All Area A requirements must be completed within the first 30 credit hours, including college-level and corequisite requirements in both English and Mathematics.
- In the event that a required Learning Support/Collegiate course pair is not available, a student may enroll in one or more unrelated courses for degree credit if the student has met the course requirements, subject to the written approval of the President or designee.
If you are interested in waiving Learning Support Requirements, please fill out the Learning Support Waiver. The Learning Support Coordinator will review your request and the Learning Support Advisor will notify you of your approval status.
