A day after three former U.S. presidents paid tribute to Zell Miller, a trio of ex-governors will preside over an executive state funeral for the Georgia politician at the state Capitol. Gov. Nathan Deal will be joined Wednesday by two of his predecessors – Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue and Joe Frank Harris – to bid farewell to the former U.S. senator and two-term governor most known for launching the HOPE scholarship.

Three former presidents representing both major political parties hailed former Georgia Gov. and U.S. Sen. Zell Miller on Tuesday as an example of statesmanship and boldness that more politicians should follow in this era of factional acrimony. Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush drew laughter, applause and an occasional “amen” at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church as they recalled the remarkable and sometimes paradoxical public life of a man who rose from Appalachia to become a Georgia icon.

Mark Murphy column: Zell Miller — The last of a rare breed

In 1984, when I was a freshman in medical school, I was fortunate enough to be awarded a Phi Kappa Phi graduate fellowship to help pay for medical school. The award was mentioned in a tiny blurb in the Augusta Chronicle, buried under a heading called “New and Noteworthy,” opposite the obituaries in the back of section B. About a week after the article ran, I received a letter from Lt. Gov. Zell Miller stating that he had read about the award in the Augusta newspaper and offering his congratulations. I was 22 years old then, a young man at the very beginning of my education — and yet the state’s lieutenant governor had taken time from his busy day to write a personal letter to me. I was so impressed that I put the letter in a scrapbook that I still have to this day. With that letter, Miller had made me an ardent fan.

From short-order cook to United States senator, former governor Zell Miller packed a multitude of experiences into his 86 years. When we last visited, I asked, “What do I call you, Governor or Senator?” “Zell would be good,” he said, “but I prefer Governor over Senator. My time in Atlanta was more special than my time in Washington.” Thinking about his answer stirred up six signature memories of the mountain man from Young Harris:

The grandson of former Georgia Gov. and U.S. Sen. Zell Miller delivered this tribute today at his grandfather’s funeral.
The theme of Bryan Miller’s touching eulogy — presented to an assemblage that included three former U.S. presidents — was that Zell Miller was always a teacher at heart. I thought you would enjoy reading it.

Over the past few days, we have mourned together the loss of one of Georgia’s finest public servants. Our family has mourned the loss of our patriarch and beloved “PaPa.” …Zell was a teacher at heart.

Staff Report From Tifton CEO
A new exhibit spotlighting the “Glory Days” of athletics at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will open its Museum Gallery doors on April 7, just in time for Homecoming 2018 and the annual Folklife Festival at ABAC’s Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village. “This is a really special event since we will be celebrating our 40th significant exhibition hosted by the GMA Gallery since its opening in 2010,” Polly Huff, curator and assistant director at the Museum, said. The “Glory Days” exhibit will feature memorabilia ranging from a collection of baseball gear from former major leaguer and ABAC alumnus Kyle Farnsworth to stories and pictures from Hall of Fame inductees. “The original Golden Stallion statue will be the centerpiece of the exhibit,” Huff said. “Anyone who loves sports and history is going to love this exhibit. Some of the artifacts will be on display for the very first time, while others will bring back fond memories of beloved ABAC groups such as The Fabulous Golddusters dance team and the 1982 State Championship Basketball Team.

It’s a fair bet that students in Texas are tired of being asked what the return on investment is for that four-year degree in music or philosophy. And they don’t need a fancy new data set to tell them that if they’d focused instead on, say, petroleum engineering, they’d wipe out their student-loan debts in no time.

Presidents growing older, serving less time in positions
Views differ about the causes and the pace of resignations by college presidents, but experts generally agree that many campuses will see a change in leadership over the next decade as a large crop of older execs decide to move out and a dwindling number of younger ones show they are prone to move around.
