UGA to replace its coal boiler with an electric option
By LEE SHEARER
The University of Georgia plans to replace its controversial coal-fired steam boiler with a more efficient electric one, UGA officials announced Wednesday. “We won’t be taking deliveries of coal in the future,” said Ryan Nesbit, UGA vice president for finance and administration. Student groups and others have lobbied university administrators for years to get rid of the aging boiler.

Commercial drones will mean big business for Georgia
Dave Williams
Staff Writer- Atlanta Business Chronicle
The soon-to-be-launched commercial drones industry will create more than 2,000 jobs in Georgia during its first three years while generating an economic impact of $379 million, an aerospace leader predicted Tuesday. The Georgia Center for Innovation for Aerospace, an arm of the state Department of Economic Development, has been working since 2009 to lay the groundwork for commercializing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), Steve Justice, the center’s director, told attendees at a briefing on drones held at the Atlanta office of McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP. For example, the center has been involved with The University of Georgia and Middle Georgia State College on a project testing camera-mounted UAVs to monitor the health of crops in farm fields.

University of Georgia Researchers Prove Link between Dietary Zeaxanthin Consumption and Improved Reaction Time
First Study to Demonstrate it is Possible for a Dietary Zeaxanthin Supplement to Increase the Speed at which the Eyes and Brain Communicate; Potential Implications for Sports and Everyday Activities
ST. LOUIS — Hitting a 95 MPH fastball is said to be the hardest thing to do in sports, but a study published today in the scientific journal PLOS ONE proves that a key nutrient can make that fastball seem a little slower. The study by the University of Georgia (UGA) Vision Sciences laboratory measured the impact of high levels of dietary zeaxanthin (20mg and above) on processing speed, or the speed at which a person’s eyes and brain communicate to identify, process and respond to stimuli.

Georgia seeks delay in high-stakes consequences of student growth on teacher evaluations
When Georgia first won its $400 million Race to the Top grant and we learned in detail what the state promised to reform in four short years, I was astounded. The long list of reforms did not seem doable, especially overhauling teacher evaluations by holding teachers accountable for student performance based on test scores or other unique measures when teachers taught in areas without standardized testing.
Turns out it wasn’t.

Why Johnny can’t find a good job and is still on your couch and your tab
By Maureen Downey
Many parents lament the inability of their recent college graduates to land good jobs. Here is a piece on possible causes by Molly Mahoney Matthew, author of “Unsinkable: Find a Job, Create a Career, Build a Business.” By Molly Mahoney Matthew …Now, back home with a college degree, the only job he can find is working the desk at a gym, for 40 disheartening hours a week. He has no time for a social life and little in common with his old high school friends. He can’t afford an apartment of his own. Worst of all, the resumes he sends out seem to get lost in the black hole of computerized automated screening. Johnny might be connected online, but he is disconnected from job success.

Georgia’s mixed economic picture merits a more thoughtful debate
Nuance is often the first casualty of an election, even before truth. So we get press releases from one side about Georgia’s worst-in-the-nation unemployment rate, and from the other about Georgia’s impressive job growth. Each side can marshal facts to its cause — and still miss the point. The point is what anyone running for office would do — can do — to stoke Georgia’s economy. And that’s a little harder to discuss without understanding what’s really going on. For starters, even within one state, there’s no such thing as “the” economy.

Student-loan default rate drops in Georgia, but it trails U.S. average
By Janel Davis – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The percentage of Georgia students who defaulted on their federal student loans has dipped slightly for the past three years, mirroring a national decline across all higher education sectors. The 14.5 percent overall default rate for Georgia’s 131 institutions reviewed was slightly higher than the national average of 13.7 percent, according to data released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Education.

‘Going’ (But Not Going) to College
By Carl Straumsheim
How do you tell high school students they’re going to attend — but not actually go to — college? It’s a conversation the University of Florida is having with potential students, parents and school counselors about UF Online, the institution’s degree-granting online arm. Now facing its first full academic year, UF Online is hitting its course development and enrollment targets, but it has so far attracted few first-time-in-college (FTIC) students.

In the Role of College President, Many Politicians Shed Their Partisanship
By Eric Kelderman
The controversy it has caused may be intense, but State Sen. John E. Thrasher’s appointment as president of Florida State University has a very familiar ring to it. Florida State’s Board of Trustees voted on Tuesday to name the Republican lawmaker as president despite the concerns of many faculty members and students, who said he was unqualified to lead the institution and who argued that his appointment smacked of partisan favoritism. A similar scene played out earlier this year, when Glenn F. McConnell, South Carolina’s lieutenant governor, was named president of the College of Charleston, sparking concerns that his interest in Confederate memorabilia was antithetical to the college’s mission. …In recent years, college presidencies—especially those at public institutions—have become regular landing places for former politicians.

New Alliance Seeks Improved Graduation Rates at Public Research Universities
by Ronald Roach
With a major emphasis on low-income and first-generation students, 11 public research universities have joined together in a national coalition to develop new practices to improve retention and graduation rates. Last week, college presidents representing Arizona State University, Purdue University and other schools comprising the newly launched University Innovation Alliance (UIA) announced their collaboration in Washington. Philanthropic organizations, including the Lumina and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundations, have committed $5.7 million to support UIA’s work and UIA universities are expected to match that investment with institutional funds.

Clemson suspends frat activities after drowning death
Ron Barnett and Doug Stanglin, USA TODAY
CLEMSON, S.C. — Two days after the body of a popular 19-year-old student was found in a nearby lake, Clemson University on Wednesday suspended the activities of 24 fraternities for reports of “serious incidents” ranging from alcohol-related emergencies to sexual misconduct. The university, located in Clemson, S.C., said in a statement that “matters of a criminal nature” were turned over to law enforcement agencies, while violations of the student code of conduct were being investigated by the university’s Office of Community and Ethical Standards. …While Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw said investigators had not turned of evidence of hazing in Hipps’ death, the university says it is “especially prudent” to suspend fraternity activities in the wake of the incident.
