STATESBORO, Ga. (WSAV) – Georgia Southern University has named an Interim President to serve in place of Dr. Jamie Hebert, who recently took a new position in Louisiana. Shelley Nickel, who has served as an interim president at a Georgia college in the past, is now taking the reins. “I am proud to serve Georgia Southern as its Interim President, especially during this pivotal time in our history,” Nickel’s ‘letter from the president’ reads. Not only is Georgia Southern under a change in leadership, but just months prior the school merged with Armstrong State University in Savannah. The merger began January 1 of this year. It’s estimated the consolidation will be complete by the Fall of 2019.

Georgia’s year-old campus carry law still stirs confusion, debate

https://www.myajc.com/news/local-education/georgia-year-old-campus-carry-law-still-stirs-confusion-debate/XFyVtliRoxa87GMEafanQJ/

A student was in a classroom, with a handgun on her in plain sight. An instructor called campus police. Southern Crescent Technical College police found the student and told her the firearm had to be concealed, according to a campus police report. The student disagreed, and showed the officer a YouTube video to insist she was correct. The officer said she told the student she could not openly carry the firearm. The law says it has to be concealed. The officer advised her to put the weapon in her vehicle, and then she could go to class. “She became upset, and stormed out of the building, kicking the front glass door to the medical building,” the campus police report said, before the student called the local police department. Last July, a new Georgia law allowed individuals with state licensed permits to carry firearms on parts of public college campuses. A year later, as this March encounter showed, there’s still ample confusion about the law. Since “campus carry” went into effect, the 22 colleges in Technical College System of Georgia have reported eight incidents in which someone carried a firearm in an unauthorized location. The University System of Georgia, which includes the state’s largest public campuses, recorded 15 violations of the campus-carry law. Both systems sent data to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in response to open records requests.

ABAC library will relocate for renovations

ABAC library to relocate from Carlton Center to Branch Hall

From Staff Reports

TIFTON — The library at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, along with all of the occupants of the college’s Carlton Center, is set to move to J. Lamar Branch Hall in the fall to make way for yearlong renovations. “The library will be relocated to the Nickelodeon on the bottom floor of J. Lamar Branch Hall,” Tim Carpenter, ABAC’s director of facilities and land resources, said. “We will fit as many books as we can into the space.” Carpenter said the library will take up every inch of space in the Nickelodeon, which was designed to house bowling lanes for students in the original concept before it opened in 1976. That bowling alley didn’t make the final cut, and the area has been used for a variety of purposes since that time, including a place for student dances, Bloodmobile visits, a movie theater, a registration site, an exhibit hall and an exercise room. The temporary library location will also spill over into a large room adjacent to the Nickelodeon that was once occupied by billiard tables and a jukebox, and later served as offices for the Student Government Association. “A limited number of computers, a one-button studio for recording presentations, and some study tables will also be available for use in the temporary library,” Carpenter said.
