University of Georgia donors contributed $242 million last year toward the school’s Commit to Georgia Campaign, the second year that gifts and new pledges surpassed $200 million and the fifth year donations have increased. The campaign’s goal is to raise $1.2 billion for scholarships, learning and research. More than $1 billion has been raised, through more than 140,000 donors, in the campaign that ends in 2020.  “I am overwhelmed with gratitude,” President Jere W. Morehead said about the donor contributions. “Without their strong leadership and commitment to this institution, this level of success would not be possible.”

Editorial: What a Deal for Augusta

http://www.augustachronicle.com/opinion/20180717/editorial-what-deal-for-augusta

By Augusta Chronicle Editorial Staff

There probably wasn’t enough ribbon to do it. And the scissors provided to the governor were obviously not up to the task. But they might as well have wrapped a ribbon around the entirety of downtown last Tuesday when Gov. Nathan Deal cut the one heralding the opening of the Georgia Cyber Center’s Hull McKnight Building. It was a rare historic moment in a very historic city. Just the first phase of a more than $100 million education, training and innovation cyber complex on the downtown riverfront — as well as the anchor for Augusta University’s Riverfront Campus — the Hull McKnight building signals a new day in Augusta. The cyber revolution is here. It means new public- and private-sector jobs — in the same building — relocated and startup businesses, the brightest minds in cyber-security taking up residence here. It means that, decades after the area’s Savannah River Site augmented national security with nuclear weaponry during the Cold War, Augusta and nearby Fort Gordon will be the heart, soul and considerable brain trust of national cyber-security. No pressure, mind you. We’ve done our part before. It also means alluring new horizons for our young, who not only will have such noble, high-minded and good-paying jobs dangling out in front of them from grade school onward, but also a growing body of cyber curricula — again, from early grades through college — to help launch those exciting, futuristic careers.

GORDON EARNS USG’S ACADEMIC RECOGNITION AWARD

http://www.wbyz94.com/2018/07/16/gordon-earns-usgs-academic-recognition-award/

One of the greatest academic student honors any student in the University System of Georgia can achieve is to be selected as a state-wide Academic Recognition Day Award winner. East Georgia State College’s 2018 winner is Tiffani Gordon, a sophomore from Alston, Ga. The ceremony honoring Gordon, hosted by University System and the Board of Regents, was followed by the recognition of her accomplishments by the Georgia House of Representatives, and the Georgia State Senate on Academic Recognition Day in March.  This idea of recognizing students from each college in the University System of Georgia began in 1987 as a way of celebrating the individual academic achievement of outstanding scholars.

By Kelly Yamanouchi, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Delta Air Lines is targeting college students and its own workforce to find future pilots with a new recruitment program. Atlanta-based Delta said it expects to hire more than 8,000 pilots over the next decade, and is launching a pilot career path program to enable that. Delta will interview aviation students at Auburn University, Middle Georgia State, Middle Tennessee State, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach and Prescott, Ariz., Minnesota State University in Mankato, the University of North Dakota and Western Michigan University for its program called Propel. Those selected would get a “qualified job offer” with a path to meet requirements to become a Delta pilot under an accelerated timeline. The program will outline how students can start their careers flying for a Delta Connection regional airline, flying for the Air National Guard or Reserves, or working as a flight instructor and flying for Delta Private Jets — and work toward a pilot job at Delta within 3½ years. Delta would also assign one of its pilots as a mentor.

A future housing option possible for students at UNG in Oakwood

https://www.gainesvilletimes.com/news/future-housing-option-possible-students-ung-oakwood/

Jeff Gill

Off-campus rental housing marketed to University of North Georgia students in Oakwood may be on the horizon. The Oakwood Planning Commission voted Monday, July 16, to recommend rezoning for 18 cottages at 2988 Frontage Road, near the Thurmon Tanner Parkway entrance to UNG. “There is a lack of housing for students near the campus,” said Steve Gilliam, a Gainesville lawyer representing the developer, Bill Stark Properties of South Hall. The development, also near the Hayes Chrysler dealership off Frontage Road, would feature 1,440-square-foot units — 720 square feet per floor — featuring three bedrooms and covering 2.3 acres.

Staff Report From Tifton CEO

When it comes to the turf at the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College golf course at Forest Lakes Golf Club near Tifton, Austin Lawton is ready to take on all comers. “Come out to a golf course that plays great and looks great year-round,” Lawton, an ABAC graduate and the Forest Lakes superintendent, said. “Our golf course is in great shape, and our turf rivals any golf course south of Macon and north of Tallahassee.” Although Forest Lakes’ nine-hole course is used by ABAC students as a teaching laboratory in a variety of subjects, the course remains open every day as a public course. Sunny summer days, green grass, and chirping birds make the perfect setting for a golf enthusiast to spend a few hours outdoors brushing up on golf skills.

The City of Kennesaw and partners from Kennesaw State University hung signage introducing Gateway Park, the city’s newest development to the community. The sign was designed by KSU’s Art Department and was hung at the corner of Sardis and Main Streets at the South entry point of downtown Kennesaw. “The sign is the first step in connecting parks and trails to the downtown district,” said Darryl Simmons, zoning administrator for the City of Kennesaw. “The pocket park will be highlighting public art which is the result of a wonderful partnership with Kennesaw State University and the City of Kennesaw.”
