Softball Sweeps Day 1 of Gulf Shores Tournament

Fickes breaks GHC Career Homerun Record to help Chargers (11-3) sweep Day One of Gulf Shores Classic.

The Chargers won game one against a very good Gulf Coast College 8-7 behind the combined arms of Micayla McCoy and Rebecca Meade. McCoy would record the win after pitching three and a third, then returning in for relief in the bottom of the 7th for Meade! The two pitchers combined for 7 strikeouts in the game. Brianna Fickes made history blasting her 4th HR of the season, and 17th career, to dead center field, breaking the career record that was held by current UGA athlete Kayleigh Medlin (2013-2015). Hannah Wills would get the walkoff sac hit to end the game scoring Wooten from third.

Game two was suspended after the 5th due to inclement weather but the Chargers recorded the 6-0 win behind a HR from freshman Shay Wooten. Due to the umpires necessary rushing to start game two, the Chargers chose to continue with McCoy on the mound. McCoy got stronger with each inning giving up only one hit in five complete innings of work.

The Chargers are now 11-3 on the season and are scheduled to play three more games tomorrow (1:30/3:45/6:00pm central). The games, however, may be postponed due to the more bad weather coming through the area overnight. Updates will be posted accordingly on Facebook and Twitter.  All games will be streamed on Facebook Live!
