Students should ignore SCLA invite email

Attention GHC Students!

Many of you may have received an invitation email from the Society of Collegiate Leadership and Achievement touting your academic record qualified you for membership. Please disregard and ignore this and any future emails from SCLA.

GHC IS NOT AFFILIATED OR CONNECTED TO SCLA IN ANY WAY AND THE INSTITUTION DID NOT PROVIDE YOUR NAME OR RECOMMEND ANY OF OUR STUDENTS TO THIS ORGANIZATION.

All honor societies affiliated with Georgia Highlands College must be a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), which is the national governing board for academic and service oriented honor organizations. ACHS sets rigorous criteria and vetting policies for all of its member organizations, and is considered the best clearinghouse for determining the validity and legitimacy of any group or organization that claims to be an “honor society”. You may search the ACHS member list for any group that you are curious about to help determine whether or not the organization is worth joining – go to www.achsnatl.org to view this list.

SCLA is one of many “college honor” for-profit organizations that have appeared over the past few decades, and while they do have established chapters at many colleges and universities across the country, they do not meet the qualifications to be recognized by ACHS as a true academic or service honor society.

I would recommend that you question any invitation email you receive from an honor society, do a little research, ask questions, and be sure that the organization is legitimate before you agree to join or especially before you pay any membership fees. While all legitimate honor societies typically require a membership fee, please take care to protect yourself from the number of scams and sub-standard groups that are out there!

Georgia Highlands College currently has chapters of THREE honor organizations approved by ACHS: Phi Theta Kappa, Psi Beta, and Alpha Beta Gamma. I would encourage you to investigate membership to one of these three organizations if you are interested in joining an honor society while at GHC.

Please let anyone from the department of Student Life know if you have any questions or need help connecting with the advisors or student leaders of our campus honor societies.

Thanks!
John
