The 18-member campus committee received its working orders Wednesday morning, not to name the next president of Georgia Southern University, but to identify three to five individuals – no more and no less – who would be acceptable in that post. “Your charge from me and the chair is to recommend, nominate, three to five candidates, unranked, any one of whom you would be happy to have as president of this institution,” Chancellor Hank Huckaby told the committee. “It’s not two. It’s not six. It’s three to five.” Huckaby, the University System of Georgia’s chief executive, spoke to the group in a sunny end room at the Nessmith Lane Conference Center on the GSU campus in Statesboro.

If you tried to find a state legislator who opposed the HOPE scholarship, you couldn’t do it. The lottery-funded program that pays college tuition for Georgia students is one of the most popular laws ever enacted. Everybody loves HOPE and no one would think of eliminating it. Rep. Stacey Evans (D-Smyrna), like her colleagues at the Gold Dome, is a major supporter of HOPE, but she did an extraordinary thing this summer to demonstrate that support. She donated $500,000 to the University of Georgia to set up the Stacey Godfrey Evans Scholarship for law school students who are first-generation college graduates — the first member of their family to get a college degree.

Ask John Eichinger about the future of medically based courses at College of Coastal Georgia and the answer is overwhelmingly optimistic. “New and exciting things are happening at (the college) and in the radiologic science program,” said Eichinger, assistant professor and director of the college’s radiology program. To help usher in radiology students, Eichinger and college administers are organizing an open house for Oct. 15 at the college. It will give prospective students the opportunity to learn more about the career Associate of Science degree in radiologic science offered by the School of Nursing and Health Sciences.

The share of federal student loan borrowers who default on their debt within three years of entering repayment dropped for the second year in a row, the U.S. Department of Education announced Wednesday.
The national default rate on student loans made by the government fell to 11.8 percent from 13.7 percent last year, the department said. Obama administration officials credited their success in getting more borrowers to sign up for income-based repayment plans for some of the decline in defaults. This year’s data capture the number of borrowers whose loans first became due during the 2012 fiscal year and who then defaulted on their debt within three years. Nationwide, more than 610,000 borrowers defaulted during that period.
