Georgia Regents University President Ricardo Azziz has submitted his letter of resignation from the university, officials with the state’s university system confirmed. The Board of Regents is scheduled to meet Thursday afternoon to discuss his resignation.

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW)- Dr. Ricardo Azziz has told the senior leadership at GRU that they should expect an announcement from Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia today. At the meeting this morning, Azziz said they should expect an announcement between 2 and 2:30 pm today. When News 12 asked GRU officials if this is about Azziz resigning, all they would say is that it is a personnel issue and the media will also have to wait for the announcement at 2.

Georgia Regents University President Ricardo Azziz is expected to announce his resignation today according to a highly placed official at the university. Azziz is expected to make the announcement during a called meeting of his cabinet at 8 a.m. today. The University System of Georgia Board of Regents is expected to make the formal announcement later today.

The Georgia Southern University College of Business Administration ranked 18th; Georgia College’s J. Whitney Bunting College of Business, 25th; Kennesaw State University’s Michael J. The initiative is part of the Georgia Institute of Technology’s Veterans Education Training and Transition (VET2) program, the first of its kind in the nation.

The Georgia Gwinnett College School of Education (SOE), in only its fourth year, has received national accreditation under the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation. Coupled with the college’s partnership with Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), this distinction positions SOE to be one of the state’s most prominent education programs.

A new study found Ebola could come to an end in Liberia by June, if the trend toward better hospitalization and preventive care continues. The study, published in the journal PLOS Biology, looked at factors such as the location of infection and treatment, the development of hospital capacity and the adoption of safe burial practices. John Drake, a professor at the Odum School of Ecology at the University of Georgia and lead author of the report, said the study looked at how various interventions that have been put in place affected transmission of the virus.

Police in Athens arrested two men Wednesday night in connection with this week’s shooting death of University of Georgia student Min Seok Cho. Cho, a 21-year-old graduate of Peachtree Ridge High School in Suwanee, died Tuesday after being brought by private vehicle to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound. Athens-Clarke County police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said Cormaine Goss, 21, and Andre Ruff, 18, were arrested and charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

WASHINGTON — Federal consumer protection officials want colleges to more thoroughly vet the agreements they make with financial institutions to provide banking products on campus. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said Tuesday that it will create voluntary guidelines for colleges as they negotiate deals with financial institutions. The goal, officials said, is for colleges to keep students’ financial interest in mind as they negotiate the terms of the arrangements with the companies.

Two fraternities at the University of Virginia say they won’t sign a new, stricter agreement issued by the college in the wake of a now-discredited Rolling Stone magazine article about an alleged sexual assault at a UVa fraternity, Bloomberg reports. The fraternities, Alpha Tau Omega and the Kappa Alpha Order, say the university erred in suspending all Greek activities after the publication of the article, which has not stood up to intense news-media scrutiny.

The president of Colgate University will not renew his contract when it expires later this year, according to a news release posted on the college’s website. Jeffrey Herbst, who became president in 2010, said in the release he was stepping down “so that new leadership can be in place as the university prepares for the next fund-raising campaign and the 2019 bicentennial celebration.”

MEXICO CITY — Mexican officials have filed an arrest warrant for the former mayor of a southern city for the kidnapping of 43 teachers’ college students. Tomas Zeron, head of criminal investigations for the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, announced the arrest order Tuesday night. Forty-four other people are named in the warrant. It is the first time the judicial system has officially linked Iguala ex-Mayor Jose Luis Abarca to the disappearances.
