GHC Sweeps on Sophomore Day

Georgia Highlands softball swept a pair of non-conference games from USC-Salkahatchie on Sunday at Stars Field in Cartersville. Dominant pitching and clutch hitting paved the way for sweep on a day that the Chargers honored their players who were sophomores academically. The wins bring the Chargers to 20-25 overall, while they hold onto their 5th spot in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association heading into the final two conference games.

In game one, Brandi Hughes (Fr./Rockmart High School) dominated from the pitching circle with a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits with ten strikeouts against just three walks, and the Chargers offense backed her up. Sierra Cagle (Fr./Chattooga High School) had 2 RBI, Emily Willingham (Fr./Excel Christian Academy) had an RBI double in the 6th- capping her 2-for-3 performance. Jerrica Littlejohn (Fr./Lafayette High School) also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Liz Prance (Fr./Seqouyah High School) also had an RBI double in the sixth.

Game two saw the Chargers picking up right where they left off. Morgan McKinney (Fr./Jefferson High School) struck out the first three batters of the game; however, an injury in the 5th would force her out of the game, but not before allowing just three
hits and striking out eight. Emily Willigham had another stellar performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a walk, double and run scored. Willingham would finish the day going 4-for-6 with 2 doubles and an RBI. Karlie Jarrett (Fr./Chattooga High School),
Lindsey Miles (Fr./Jefferson High School) and Jerrica Littlejohn also each had multi-hit games for the Chargers.

Between games, Georgia Highlands honored their players were sophomores academically. As a first-year program, all the players are in their first year of eligibility, but Brandi Hughes and Lindsay Roach (Fr./Woodland High School) were already students at GHC and are graduating next month.

The Chargers will finish out their conference schedule this week with a pair of away doubleheaders against Georgia Military College and East Georgia College, respectively. Then they will await the results of the other weekend conference games to see if they are bound for the GCAA tournament (top six teams in the conference make the tournament), and a chance to earn a spot in the NJCAA national tournament.
