We are committed to the health and safety of our students, employees, and guests. If you are experiencing symptoms or have been exposed to someone with COVID-19, we ask that you do not attend the ceremony. Face coverings (over the nose and mouth) are required for all attendees while entering and moving about the ceremony venue.

For those who cannot attend in person, a livestream of the ceremony will be available at commencement.highlands.edu and on GHC’s social media channels. Anyone deemed at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 by public health officials is strongly encouraged to view the livestream rather than attend the ceremony in person.

GHC ID and/or guest passes are REQUIRED to enter the venue area. More information on guest passes provided below.

GENERAL INFORMATION

GHC 2021 Commencement – Thursday, May 13th

(Friday, May 14th – severe weather contingency)

Ceremony Start Times: Eligible GHC graduates who submitted an online reservation form for commencement by April 2nd deadline will be allowed to participate in the commencement for the ceremony time they requested. Ceremonies begin at 10am and 6pm. Nursing pinning/commencement begins at 3pm.

Graduate Check-in: Graduates must check in one hour prior to their ceremony start time in the designed check-in area located in front of the Walraven Building near the GHC tower.

  • 10am ceremony – Check in at 9am
  • 3pm ceremony – Check in at 2pm
  • 6pm ceremony – Check in at 5pm

Gates Open: Guests of graduates will be allowed to enter venue area one hour prior to ceremony start time. Guest passes are required for all guests over 2 years of age to enter the commencement venue area (see GUEST PASSES information below for more details).

Ceremony location/venue: All commencement ceremonies will be held outdoors at the Georgia Highlands College Floyd campus located at 3175 Cedartown Highway, Rome, Georgia. Please dress comfortably for the weather conditions. Guest and graduate seating will be set up on the lawn area so please wear appropriate shoes for navigating grassy and unlevel terrain.

GUEST PASSES

Eligible GHC graduates who submitted an online reservation form for commencement by April 2nd deadline will receive 4 guest passes upon check-in on May 13th.

Graduates must check in one hour prior to their ceremony start time in the designed check-in area located in front of the Walraven Building near the GHC tower. At check-in, graduates will receive 4 guest passes to give their guests at that time. Guest passes will not be distributed ahead of time. Guests should proceed to venue area with their guest passes to be seated, and graduates will remain at the check-in area for the commencement processional line-up.

Guest passes are required to enter the commencement venue area. Guest passes are for general admission. Seating will be arranged in groups of four connected chairs to ensure proper social distancing and seating in family groups. Please do not sit with other parties. Gates open one hour prior to the ceremony start time.

We sincerely wish we could accommodate more guests, but in light of current public health official guidance on social distancing, seating is limited. The pandemic conditions make this ceremony different than traditional ceremonies previously held. For these reasons, each graduate is limited to 4 guests. Family and friends who are unable to attend in person are encourage to celebrate via livestream at commencement.highlands.edu or GHC’s social media channels.

PARKING

Parking for all Commencement ceremonies is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please follow directional signage and parking directions provided upon arrival.

DISABILITY ACCESS

Wheelchair seating accommodations will be provided with sets of 3 connected chairs for additional companions.

Guests with mobility concerns should plan for navigating grassy and unlevel terrain.

An ASL interpreter will sign the commencement ceremony. A section of general admission seating will be designated for the hearing impaired. An usher can direct guests to the designated location.

DISABILITY PARKING (PERMIT REQUIRED)

Parking for guests with disabilities is available in designated areas. Disability Parking Permits are required to park in these areas.

FACE COVERINGS

Face coverings (over the nose and mouth) are required. Attendees are required to have face coverings for ingress, egress, and movement throughout the venue, as well as any time guests are unable to maintain the recommended physical distance from others who are not in their same household.

Face coverings are not a substitute for social distancing, and guests are asked to keep a safe distance between their party and others while at the commencement ceremony.

VIEWING OPTIONS

We encourage those that are unable/unwilling to attend the in-person ceremony to view the ceremony online. A link will be posted at commencement.highlands.edu and on GHC’s social media channels.

PROHIBITED ITEMS

Security has the right to inspect any item at any time for the purpose of safety.

Prohibited items must be returned to cars or disposed of before entering and will not be accepted by employees nor stored at the gates.

For the safety, security, and experience of all guests, the following items are prohibited:

  • Alcohol
  • Glass and aluminum containers
  • Large items, such as banners and posters, or amplification equipment, such as bullhorns or megaphones
  • Large umbrellas that may obstruct the view of others

GHC is a tobacco-free campus.

RESTROOMS

  • Restroom facilities will be available in the Floyd Campus Gymnasium.
  • Attendants will be assigned to restrooms to aid with sanitizing touch points.
  • All restrooms will be sanitized with an electrostatic sprayer before the ceremony.

CLEANING & SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

  • All restrooms and common areas used for commencement activities will be sanitized before each ceremony.
  • Hand sanitizers will be available throughout the venue.
  • Mini hand sanitizers will be provided for all graduates.
  • Free bottled water will be available for guests.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

The Commencement ceremonies will be held rain or shine and will be rescheduled only in the event of severe weather. Severe weather is defined as rain accompanied by high wind, thunder, and lightning. If necessary, the alternate ceremony time will be announced on this website.

If it is raining on the morning of Commencement but not declared severe weather, the ceremony will be held as planned. Rain ponchos will be provided for all graduates.

Any changes to the Commencement ceremonies will be announced via GHC’s social media channels and the GHC homepage no later than three hours prior to the ceremony start time.
