Charger Athletics Recap – All Four Teams in Action Over the Weekend

The past Friday, Saturday, and Sunday was a busy time for the Charger Athletics teams. For the first time this school year, all 4 teams were in action. Here’s a recap.

Women’s Basketball

The Lady Chargers solidified their hold on the 2-seed in the GCAA with a convincing 60-32 win in the Corral over the visiting Andrew College Lady Tigers. Jahnaria Brown led the way with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Brown was also named GCAA Women’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Andrew and the team’s win over Central GA Tech on Wednesday. The honor is the second week in a row, and third overall, for a Lady Charger.

The team is on the road for their next 5 games before returning to the Corral on February 17 when they host Southern Crescent Tech in a make-up game from earlier in the season.

Softball

The Lady Charger softball hit the road and headed to Florida to kick off their 2020 season under new head coach, Savannah Sloan. After a winter break filled with change for the program, the layers were ready to just play ball.

On Friday, the team split a double-header with Lake Sumter State College. The Chargers dropped the opener 13-5 before rebounding for a 5-4 win in Game 2. The win marked the first collegiate victory for Coach Sloan. Madalyn Morton (0-1) took the loss in Game 1 while Montana Ledbetter (1-0) earned the win in Game 2. Taryn Hitchcock led the team at the plate over the 2 games, going 3-6 with 2 HR and 5 RBI.

Rain on Saturday results in one cancelled game while the 2nd was pushed back late into the day. The team as able to stay composed and score a 9-8 victory over Eastern Florida State College. Maggie Schandera (1-0) earned the victory on the mound for the Lady Chargers while Izzy Marcotte led at the plate going 4-4 with 2 doubles in the game.

Sunday was a tough day for the Lady Chargers. The lost Game 1 to Gulf Coast State College 10-5 and were shutout in Game 2 by Indian River State College 7-0. Game 1 saw 3 pitchers get action with Madalyn Morton (0-2) taking the loss. Haley Robinson (0-1) took the loss in Game 2.

The team has their first home games today (February 4) against Roane State Community College at 2:00 & 4:00PM. The teams plays their games at Star’s Field located next to the Bartow County School System Central Registration Office Google Maps

Men’s Basketball

After their first conference loss on Wednesday, the men were looking to rebound on the road against Andrew College on Saturday. The Chargers got a balanced attack with 5 players scoring in double-figures and 3 players grabbing at least 10 rebounds on their way to a 90-65 victory that keeps them tied for 1st in the GCAA at just past the half-way point of the conference schedule. The Chargers were led by Cahiem Brown and Taj Fraley, each with 21 points. Brown also grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out 6 assists, and had 2 steals in one of his best all-around games of the season. Langston Wilson (12 points & 10 rebounds), Trevin Wade (10 points), and Nicolas Huteau (10 pints) rounded out the leading scorers. Jamal Burke led the way with 11 rebounds.

Baseball

The baseball team opened the season with a series sweep of visiting Chattanooga State Community College with scores of 14-4 (Game 1), 11-0 (Game 2), and 9-7 (Game 3). A full game summary can be found HERE
