Black History Month events from Student Life

February is Black History Month and the Dept. of Student Life has scheduled a number of activities and events from which students, faculty, and staff to find enjoyment, knowledge, and inspiration.

A BHM Film Series will be held at all locations, so check with the Student Life office at your site for dates/times and film titles. All screenings will include discussion and reflection afterwards, and faculty are invited to bring classes, offer extra credit, and participate in the discussions. Some titles planned include “African American History Greatest Speeches,” “Afro Promo – Trailers of Black Cinema,” and “White Scripts & Black Supermen,” among others. Not all selections will be shown at all locations, so check with Student Life at your site for the campus-specific schedule.

Several passive displays will also be available for viewing that highlight famous black Americans and a timeline of black history. Be sure to stop by and take a look at the display at your GHC location.

Student Life will also feature a field trip to the Martin Luther King Jr. Center in Atlanta on Friday, Feb. 28. The trip will visit the national historic site, Ebeneezer Baptist Church, view MLK Jr.’s birthplace, and enjoy lunch in the Sweet Auburn district. Students may sign up for the trip by emailing stulife@highlands.edu and include their name, GHC ID #, campus, and cell phone. Limited free transportation is available, and students will be responsible for their food cost during the lunch stop.

Lastly, Student Life will feature a series of live performances by comedian AZEEM, who was one of the founding members of the award-winning comedy tour “Allah Made Me Funny.” He is a 2005 MPAC Image Award winner and has been featured on BET, Comedy Central, and is a favorite on Carnival Cruise Lines. Currently, he is touring with the “Super Muslim Comedy Tour.”  Azeem will be visiting GHC’s locations Feb. 24-March 2, so check with Student Life for the date at your location.

As always, please encourage your students to participate in these co-curricular events and communicate with Student Life if you would like to partner on these or future events.

Thanks!
