CETL Teaching Tips
As we near the end of the semester, students may need extra motivation to finish strong. Here are a few ideas to encourage a successful semester:
- Ask your students to consider what they have learned throughout the semester. This practice shows students they have been working hard and it can help increase their self-efficacy.
- Be sure your final assignments and exams are explained thoroughly to students. Consider the TiLT method of writing assignments so that the purpose, tasks, and grading criteria are clearly stated. Additionally, providing exam specifications can help to reduce anxiety and provide the students with structure and guidance for the exam.
- Remember that motivation (Ambrose et al., 2010) includes:
Value – Do students value the work they are doing?
Expectancy – Do students expect to do well?
Supportive Environment – What can you do to help your students to be successful?
Faculty can affect each of these areas to encourage and motivate students.
November workshops topics include:
- Course Redesign
- Motivation and Metacognition
- Desire to Learn – Level 1 Workshop
