September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.  Know your risk factors, be able to identify symptoms, and get tips to reduce your risk.

Who Is Most At Risk?

  • Men who are age 50 or older.
  • Are African American. African American men are more likely to have prostate cancer than white or Hispanic men.
  • Have BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations or Lynch syndrome.
  • Have a family histories of prostate cancer.

Symptoms:

There are usually no symptoms in the early stages.  Some men experience symptoms that include:

  • Urinary problems
  • Blood in the urine
  • Painful or difficult erection
  • Pain in lower back, pelvis or upper thighs

Reduce Your Risk

  • Talk to your doctor at age 50 about the pros and cons of prostate cancer screening.
  • Never smoke. If you do, quit.
  • Know your family history.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
