New Assistant Professor of Journalism and Communications

Please join us in welcoming Allison Hattaway to her role as an Assistant Professor of Journalism and Communications. Originally from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, she is a southern transplant who has called Rome her home since her time at Berry College where she earned a B.A. in communication and M.A. from Auburn University.

During her time at Auburn, Hattaway realized her love of teaching as a graduate teaching assistant and passion for research while writing her thesis. She earned the Auburn University Bert E. Bradley Award for outstanding performance as a graduate student and saw her thesis research published in the Journal of Radio Studies.

In 2001, after completing her graduate work, Hattaway found herself returning to Rome to join the Shorter College department of communication arts where she spent eight years teaching and serving as the student publications adviser of Shorter’s award-winning newspaper and yearbook staffs. While at Shorter College, Hattaway earned the 2004 Teaching Excellence Award sponsored by the Vulcan Materials Company in recognition of her outstanding contributions to undergraduate education, student learning and campus life.

In 2009, Hattaway was recruited by the Northwest Georgia office of Herff Jones Yearbooks and spent 10 years working alongside more than 160 schools while training educators and their staffs on how to build strong yearbook programs, using best practices in journalism and effective marketing strategies. Most recently, Hattaway joined the marketing team at The Spires at Berry College where her talents in special events planning, sales and graphic design have been greatly valued. Hattaway has also taught part-time for Georgia Highlands College on both the Floyd and Cartersville locations since 2004 and is eager to join the GHC faculty full time.

When she’s not working, Hattaway can be found enjoying time with her husband, Richard, a mortgage lender for First Bank, oldest son, Trey, a freshman at Model High School and youngest son, Evan, a second-grader at Johnson Elementary. Hattaway also enjoys spoiling her rescue dog, a Puggle named Pickles.

Give Allison a warm GHC welcome!
