GSW’s Residence Hall Association places 3rd state competition

AMERICUS — Over last weekend, Georgia Southwestern State University’s (GSW) Residence Hall Association (RHA) placed third in the Most Spirited Delegation at the Georgia Residence Hall Organization (GHRO) annual conference in Milledgeville. The conference, held at Georgia College, united RHAs from all over the University System of Georgia to learn how to improve life for on-campus residents. GRHO is a student-led organization that promotes leadership training, honoring diversity and engaging student leaders. GRHO pledges to support and advocate the interests of USG college and university residents.

New Equipment at Six South Georgia Hospitals Assists Nurses Pursuing ABAC Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing just got a lot easier in South Georgia thanks to the cooperation of six rural hospitals who utilized grant funds to install mobile video carts to assist nurses enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) online program at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. “Despite the popularity, online teaching and learning sometimes present challenges,” Dr. Jaibun Earp, Dean of the ABAC School of Nursing and Health Sciences, said.  “Using this dedicated video conferencing technology in the classroom increases faculty-student interaction and social presence which improves student learning outcomes.”  Troy Spicer, Director of the ABAC Health Center, says visuals really make a difference.

Georgia Southern’s i2STEMe Partners with STEM Development in India

Kania Greer, Ed.D., and Lisa Stueve, Ed.D., of Georgia Southern University’s Institute for Interdisciplinary STEM Education (i2STEMe), recently traveled to India to continue work that began in 2016 as a partnership with the STEM Academy of USA. College of Education’s (COE) Greer and Stueve worked with students as young as preschoolers at the Edistaa School in Mumbai. “We worked closely in helping teachers utilize best practices in allowing kids to discover and learn basic STEM concepts,” Greer said. “We also participated in a school carnival and oversaw the management of four STEM-related tables where very young students could explore and engage with puzzles, sorting, drawing and creating stories.” Greer and Stueve also traveled to Kolkata to work with teachers and students in fourth through 10th grades to create hands-on, place-based activities for students.

Natural Resources Conservation Workshop planned at ABAC

$15,000-plus in scholarships to be awarded at June workshop

More than $15,000 in college scholarships, back-to-nature field trips, and a true taste of college life will be on the line for high school students who attend this year’s Natural Resources Conservation Workshop (NRCW) June 9-13 at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College. “The workshop provides an excellent opportunity to engage high school students in the importance of natural resources and agriculture in Georgia,” NRCW Interim Director Kip Hall, an assistant professor of forestry at ABAC, said. “During NRCW, students gain a new perspective on conservation, stewardship, and sustainable agriculture with both classroom and outdoor experiential learning. The workshop opens the door for many students to consider a college major for a career in agriculture and natural resources.”

Georgia Tech reaches deal for annual home game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Georgia Tech will be calling Mercedes-Benz Stadium its home at least once for the next five years following a partnership agreement with AMB Sports & Entertainment and Peach Bowl Inc. The three organizations said Tuesday that the Yellow Jackets football team will play an annual home game at the $1.5 billion home of Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United from 2020-24. Financial details of the partnership were not released. A sellout crowd watched Georgia Tech play Tennessee at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2017. Georgia Tech said on its team website that the deal helps with its branding efforts, helping the school further establish itself as a major part of the Atlanta sports landscape.
