Georgia business and government leaders are using Delta’s inaugural direct flight from Atlanta to Shanghai on July 20 as the jumping-off point for a week-long trade mission to China. Led by Chris Riley, Gov. Nathan Deal’s chief of staff, and Georgia Commissioner of Economic Development Pat Wilson, the 33-member delegation will attend a networking reception celebrating Delta’s new direct route to China and witness the signing of an agreement between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and the Shanghai Airport Authority. After those diplomatic niceties, the delegation will split into three groups and meet with four corporate prospects, hold roundtable discussions with the U.S. Commercial Service and American Chamber of Commerce and conduct relationship-building meetings with Chinese government leaders and trade representatives. …Besides Riley and Wilson, the Georgia delegation will include Steve Wrigley, chancellor of the University System of Georgia,

Georgia’s fast-growing cybersecurity industry just got Christmas in July. Gov. Nathan Deal and industry leaders unwrapped the new Hull McKnight Georgia Cyber Center for Innovation and Training July 10, a $100 million project in Augusta that will house education, training and research and development missions in two buildings along the Savannah River. More than 115 information security companies already are operating in the Peach State, generating $4.7 billion in annual revenue and employing a workforce of 27,260 in Georgia, most in metro Atlanta. The cyber center is expected to take the industry’s presence in Georgia to the next level and beyond. …Deal has been a driving force behind the state-owned cyber center, unveiling his plans for the project in January of last year when he asked the General Assembly for an initial $60 million. Lawmakers delivered that chunk of funding last year, then kicked in the rest during this year’s legislative session in combination with the city of Augusta. …In the wake of the Army Cyber Command coming to Augusta, the University System of Georgia has begun offering bachelor’s degrees in cybersecurity at Augusta University and Kennesaw State University. The University of North Georgia (UNG) in Dahlonega, one of the nation’s six senior military colleges, will launch a cybersecurity bachelor’s program this fall.

ALBANY— The B.E.L. Initiative, a program of the Georgia Haitian-American Chamber of Commerce, brought 10 students from Haiti to America for the first time for an educational opportunity recently. The Albany Business League was invited to participate, and Albany State University hosted the students. The goal of the B.E.L. Initiative is for these students, along with many others, to become part of “Fifty by 2030”— a collective of B.E.L. Initiative alumni with bachelor’s degrees and higher to build and develop Haiti. In partnership with Albany State’s Office of International Education and College of Business, the 10 entrepreneurs and university students from Haiti will spend one week on campus at Albany State focusing on business and leadership and will spend another week at Georgia Technical College focusing on business and technology. They will remain in the state through July 22. The goal is to sharpen and prepare the participants to return to their communities in Haiti and implement what they have learned in business, entrepreneurship and leadership. The participants were welcomed by Albany State and will continue the program on campus through Sunday.

Leaders of a dozen Historically Black Colleges & Universities, including two in Georgia, met Wednesday with the educational arm of the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization to discuss steps the schools are taking to better support those students on campus. The day-long summit meeting was the largest-ever gathering of HBCU presidents discussing LGBTQ inclusive practices and policies, Human Rights Campaign officials said. Officials from Savannah State University and Spelman College attended the meeting, the HRC said. Yesterday’s meeting was the second annual meeting between the HRC and HBCUs.
