The University System of Georgia Board of Regents announced Tuesday that Michelle Johnston will serve as the next president of College of Coastal Georgia. Johnston was named May 16 as the sole finalist in the search for CCGA’s president. “The entire campus is excited by the USG’s selection of Dr. Michelle Johnston as the next president of the College of Coastal Georgia,” said Tanya Cofer, chair of the College of Coastal Georgia’s presidential search and screen committee. “We look forward to welcoming her to the Mariner family.” Johnston will begin this summer, and a start date has yet to be confirmed. “Dr. Johnston will be a strong advocate for the College of Coastal Georgia and build on its partnership with the community and coastal region,” said University System of Georgia Chancellor Steve Wrigley, in a press release Tuesday.  “We are excited about the future of the College of Coastal Georgia and the momentum Dr. Johnston will bring for the benefit of students.”

Fulbright scholarship takes UNG grad to Taiwan to teach English

Just last week, if someone were to ask Lily O’Clery where she would be spending the next year of her life, she wouldn’t have been too sure of her answer. It might have been in South Korea, or really, anywhere else in the world, but it definitely wasn’t going to be in Taiwan on a scholarship from the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. “My soul was a little bit crushed,” said O’Clery, 23, after not being selected as a finalist for the scholarship. “I had spent, like, from June to October, working on the application. So it was kind of devastating.” Things have changed since May 14, when the University of North Georgia graduate was just an alternate for the scholarship, which “offers research, study and teaching opportunities in over 140 countries to recent graduates and graduate students.” O’Clery suddenly became a finalist for the Fulbright scholarship after others declined it. She will head to Taiwan in September to spend 10 months as an English teaching assistant. …“The goal is for the people of the United States to connect to people of other cultures and just facilitate cultural exchange,” O’Clery said.

The University System of Georgia is looking to hire design and program management firms for construction of a new $23 million building for the Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia. The building will be 64,334 square feet with a total project budget is estimated at $23.5 million. In requests for qualifications issued on May 8 and May 21, the Board of Regents notes that, “In 2015, the Richards College of Business enrolled a record number of students, taught a record number of SCHs [semester credit hours], and engaged a record number of students in international experiences. The college has nearly doubled in size over the past twenty years, and is now housed in two different buildings. Miller Hall, the current main home of the College of Business, was built in two phases in 1958 and 1985, and is no longer a suitable facility. With increasing enrollments and a high student/faculty ratio, further growth of the Richards College educational programs and economic outreach is limited by current facilities.”
