New Web Calendars
We’ve switched all of the calendars served on our website to a new system, which among other things allows us to create as many web calendars and sub-calendars as we wish. The system also gives us the capability to present these calendars in several formats for display and will also be more mobile friendly. We have elected to create a new master web Georgia Highlands Calendar, and several sub-calendars that feed up to this master calendar. The sub-calendars, which can also stand alone, are the following calendars: Academics, Student Life, Athletics. So, when you view the master, Georgia Highlands Calendar, you will see all of the events from these three above calendars mixed into the one master calendar. You can filter these views on the right side by checking/unchecking the categories to see only those specific events from those sub-calendars. You can further filter events by campus if you so choose.
Additionally, from the top of each calendar you can navigate to one of these sub-calendar pages. where you can uniquely filter additional categories of events even further. These categories can change over time as needed, but represent the starting points based on some analysis and input from the current calendar owners. These calendars are public and intended for our students, interested employees, and other interested parties.
There are two additional calendars that will be presented on our Intranet page: Employee Calendar and Video Conferencing Calendar. These were also current calendars that we have exported/imported the content and moved to this new platform. While they are sub-calendars to our new master Georgia Highlands Calendar, their events to not mix in with the overall master, Georgia Highlands Calendar, as the above three public calendars do so. These are intended more as private, behind the scenes calendars for employees only.
This project is almost complete, as we await a couple more training sessions for calendar editors and the addition of some new events for the Student Life Calendar. These are live now, however. If you find a link to one of the older calendars or perhaps had one saved, please do not use those calendars any longer and update your bookmarks accordingly. We will decommission the old calendars shortly.
Just like with the Intranet project and the initial organization of that content into those four buckets, these initial calendars represent the current web calendars we already had in production, except for the creation of the Athletics calendar. We can easily add additional calendars for other areas of the institution, as those needs arise and people have valuable information they want to present in a web calendar format. This is just our starting place based on what we already had.
While Athletics will continue to maintain their own calendar because of schedules and scoring results on their site, http://ghcchargers.com/, we do want to also display their events in this location as well, as this will allow these events to be integrated with all other student-related activities. It will also allow us to present a mix of all student events into a feed on our main www site, similar to a format like you see at the bottom of the new Intranet page.
