Subject: Dr. Cathy Ledbetter’s decision to retire

Dear GHC Community,

It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of Dr. Cathy Ledbetter’s decision to retire. Allow me to share some impressions.

Cathy has been a champion for Georgia Highlands, first as our Dean for the Douglasville and Dallas sites followed by the organizer of our strategic plan and, recently, as the leader of our extremely successful SACSCOC reaffirmation campaign. Cathy is currently engaged in the expansion of our institutional research services which will feed analytics based decision making for the future of the college.

As I consider Cathy’s impact on GHC, the institution was transformed because of her leadership. Cathy has been a trailblazer in pursuing inclusion for all students, faculty and staff.  She has gently reminded our leadership team that all must feel welcome at GHC. That culture of tolerance will continue far beyond all of us.

When I reflect on Cathy’s management style, I recall Theodore Roosevelt’s approach to foreign policy, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” Cathy has a huge heart and she invests it in every plan she chooses to undertake. She speaks softly, with love, as she requests your support in her initiatives but, take heed if you do not accomplish your tasks on time! I have been the rightful recipient of those admonishments and that attentiveness was exactly what GHC needed to secure the triumph and praise we garnered in our SACSCOC review!

During Cathy’s tenure at GHC she has collaborated with many different people: students, faculty, staff and community members. She has received high praise from every constituency, winning respect AND sincere appreciation. Her approximate departure date will be June 30 and I will truly miss her.

Sincerely,

Don Green
