There are a ton of excellent colleges to choose from, but three institutions in Georgia have cracked the latest national rankings by WalletHub. The personal finance site recently released its annual best colleges list, which highlights the 500 best universities in America.  To determine the results, researchers compared nearly 1,000 higher-education institutions in the U.S. using 26 key measures, such as student-faculty ratio, graduation rate and student loan debt.  Those metrics were then filtered into seven major categories: cost and financing; faculty resources, campus safety, campus experiences, educational outcomes and career outcomes. Of the 13 Georgia colleges in the round-up, three earned spots among the top 100, including Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University and the University of Georgia. Georgia Tech ranked No. 32, overall, while Emory and UGA were No. 41 and No. 76, respectively.

Another list and another high ranking for the University of Georgia. This time it’s WalletHub’s list of 2018’s Best Universities in America. The personal finance website ranked more than 1,000 institutions of higher learning throughout the country. UGA was in the top 100 nationally and in the top 20 regionally. Analyst Jill Gonzalez says they considered almost 30 different factors. “We wanted to take a deeper dive into what students can expect upon graduation, what’s the average salary later on after graduation,” Gonzalez said. “That’s where UGA actually did the best; average salary is looking pretty high. We’re also seeing that it’s a great return on investment.” She says there were other strong points for the university as well.

Valdosta State University hosted a week of festivities to celebrate its 10th president, Dr. Richard Carvajal. The week included a front lawn celebration Thursday evening, which allowed students and members of the community to reach new heights with the chance for hot air balloon rides. Other front lawn activities included games, giveaways, food, live music and the unveiling of the new VSU class ring. Though Carvajal was named VSU president in Dec. 2016 and started in January, his installation ceremony was the formal event conferring the authority and responsibility of his position onto him. This official ceremony was held Friday morning, with another celebration following at the VSU Fine Arts building at 12:30 p.m. Dr. Thomas Hopkins, chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and VSU alumnus, gave the call to service at the installation ceremony. …Chancellor of the University System of Georgia Steve Wrigley performed the official installation of the president in which Carvajal was invested with the duties and responsibilities of his position at VSU and to perform with integrity, fairness and humanity.

The University of North Georgia is looking for a select group of candidates who are thinking about going to graduate school, but lack the support to make that next big step. UNG has been awarded $1.13 million over five years by the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program to continually serve 25 high-achieving, low-income, first-generation and/or underrepresented students to gain the necessary skills to become competitive candidates for doctoral programs. The McNair program is designed to identify and prepare second-term sophomores, juniors and seniors from all UNG campuses for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Participants are either first-generation college students with financial need or members of a group traditionally underrepresented in graduate education (African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic/Latino, Pacific Islander) but have shown strong academic potential.

ALBANY — Albany State University recently received funding that will allow the university to be an active player in preventing dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking on college campuses. The university was awarded a three-year, $300,000 grant by the Department of Justice and the Office of Violence Against Women to engage, educate and empower the campus and surrounding communities on a problem that has grown nationwide. “The grant is especially significant because colleges and universities face unique issues and challenges in preventing and responding to sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking,” ASU Chief Legal Affairs Officer Rowena Daniels said. “ASU will be very intentional in addressing key populations in an effort to increase awareness and decrease biases and stigmatization.”

Every October, Ruth’s Cottage and The Patticake House hold a “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” event as a fun way to raise awareness about domestic violence and the importance of the role of men, young men in particular, to step up and be aware of the issue. This is an international event where men walk a literal mile wearing women’s high-heeled shoes as a way to get the community talking about gender relations and men’s sexualized violence against women. The walkers take a pledge that they will honor women in their relationships and avoid any kind of violence and control in their relationships. This year’s walk, while not boasting the largest crowd, did have the most money raised. …The ABAC baseball team and the Alpha Gamma Rho-Gamma Delta Chapter made a good showing, along with the Tiftarea Academy baseball team and the Tift County High School baseball team. The Georgia Public Safety Training Center ABAC cadets participated as well, many of them wearing heels or carrying signs. …Sponsors for the event were Ruth’s Cottage and The Patticake House, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, ABAC Stallions baseball team, Tift Regional Health Systems, ABAC chapter of the Georgia Association of Nursing Students,

AMERICUS — A public safety officer from Georgia Southwestern State University received special recognition recently at the annual Georgia Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators conference. Sgt. Michael Lewis was named the GACLEA’s Oris W. Bryant, Jr. Officer of the Year. An Americus native, Lewis has more than 23 years of experience in law enforcement. He has been on the GSW Public Safety Department staff for the past five years and was promoted to sergeant within the last year. “Over my long career, I have found no greater happiness than watching our young students enter university life bright-eyed and eager to make a difference,” Lewis said. “I am truly blessed to be able to help them, in some way, in that pursuit.” The GACLEA Officer of the Year award is named in honor of GSW’s former public safety director, Chief Oris W. Bryant Jr., who passed away in 2013. The award recognizes one officer each year for promoting and upholding safety on college campuses in Georgia. Lewis’ supervisor, Chief Mike Tracy, said Lewis is deserving of this recognition.

A Kennesaw State University student is not allowed back on campus after police said he attacked students and threatened to kill everyone in his class. Police told Channel 2’s Matt Johnson this whole incident took place inside the science and math building on campus. According to the arrest warrant, 19-year-old Samuel Friedman, attacked one student and sexually harassed a female student in a math class Tuesday afternoon. During that class, he also allegedly said “I am going to marinate on the thought of killing you all.”  “I don’t know how i would handle it as a student,” student Alexis Wall-Raven said.  The arrest warrant Johnson obtained said parents “have expressed concerns that they fear for the safety of their children.”
