At many Ga. colleges, reports of sex assault rise
UGA, Ga. Tech among the campuses that see increase
By Janel Davis and Shannon McCaffrey – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
…The September 2013 case — detailed in a campus police file reviewed by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution — is one of dozens of sexual assaults Georgia college campuses reported this week to federal education officials. The new statistics show reports of sexual assaults have jumped at most of Georgia’s larger universities, including UGA, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State and Georgia Southern. School officials attribute the rise to better outreach, leading to more students coming forward.

Students divided in smoking ban debate

The Phi Kappa Literary Society held a debate Thursday evening to discuss the repeal of the University System of Georgia policy banning the use of tobacco products on campus following, which went into effect Oct. 1. Song Kue, a graduate student studying in biomanufacturing and bioprocessing from Warren, Michigan, said the ban is not only good, but necessary. “This legislation is intended for behavior modification, to create a cleaner and safer environment at the University of Georgia and all colleges across the state, to ensure that all students have the liberty to breath in clean air,” Kue said. “This policy has nothing to do with [infringing upon the rights and liberties of smokers]. It is about creating an overall healthier environment.”

School officials still challenged to fill vacancies
By Johnny Jackson
McDONOUGH — Officials continue to be challenged in finding a qualified pool of applicants to fill vacancies that persist in Henry County Schools — even with 19,377 applications on file. …She said fewer college graduates are pursing teaching positions, disheartened by the effects of the recession and perceptions of declining opportunities in secondary education. First-year teachers, nonetheless, represent 48 percent of new teacher hires. Many of them come from the district’s partner post-secondary institutions — Mercer University, Gordon State College and Clayton State University. Georgia College and State University, the University of West Georgia, Georgia State University, the University of Georgia, Georgia Southern and Valdosta State University also have a hefty contingent of rookie teachers, according to district data.

Captioning on Google Glass Subtitles Conversations for Hard of Hearing
While everyone is trying to decide whether or not Google Glass is useful, invasive or just plain dorky, it’s easy to overlook some genuinely helpful apps and services — like this one, which presents users who are hard of hearing with near-real-time transcriptions of what’s being said in conversation. Created by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Captioning on Glass uses a paired smartphone to record and transcribe speech, which is then instantly displayed on the screen of the headset. The group is also working on a version that quickly translates the spoken words into a second language for the benefit of the listener, then translates their response back into the first language.

Hitting the gym can boost your memory, researchers have found. They say an intense workout of as little as 20 minutes can enhance your long-term memory by 10 percent in healthy young adults. Although the study used weight exercises, researchers said that resistance activities such as squats or knee bends would probably produce the same results… The Georgia Tech researchers also had participants study events just before the exercise rather than after workout.

How Consumers’ Moods Drive Decisions
By Derek Thompson
In April this year, scientists from Georgia Tech and Yahoo Labs reported that something strange was manipulating online restaurant reviews. It wasn’t hackers. It wasn’t software bugs. It was rain, snow, and sunshine. After looking at more than 1 million online reviews on sites like TripAdvisor, they found that restaurants received significantly better ratings on days with nice weather and worse reviews on any day with rain. “The best reviews are written on sunny days between 70 and 100 degrees,” researcher Saeideh Bakhshi concluded. “A nice day can lead to a nice review. A rainy day can mean a miserable one.” In short: Yelp reviews are accidental weather reports.

Drug development company Clearside Biomedical Inc. has raised $16 million — capital it will invest in conducting a clinical trail. Alpharetta-based Clearside Biomedical has developed a micro-injection platform technology that allows a surgeon to deliver medication specifically to the retina — improving the effectiveness of the drug while reducing side effects that may occur when the drug enters into other parts of the eye. Clearside’s technology would deliver drugs to treat the leading causes of blindness. The proprietary technology, licensed from Georgia Tech and Emory University, is designed to nonsurgically deliver drugs to a tiny compartment in the back of the eye, known as the suprachoroidal space.

Nagging unemployment plaguing Georgia recovery

From health parks in East Cobb to office campuses in Dunwoody to apartments in Buckhead and Midtown, everywhere metro Atlantans look, buildings are going up. Yet, those signs of a rapidly recovering economy stand in sharp contrast to a stubbornly high unemployment rate. Four years after hitting a Great Recession unemployment peak of 10.2 percent, joblessness in Georgia still stood at 8.1 percent last month, highest in the country and two points above the national average. …It all comes down to simple arithmetic, said David Sjoquist, an economics professor at Georgia State University. “In Georgia up until the Great Recession, unemployment typically was about a percentage point below the U.S. average,” Sjoquist said. “The labor force in Georgia has grown at about the same rate as the rest of the nation, about 1.5 percent. But employment hasn’t grown as fast. … Georgia is not creating jobs fast enough.” Jeff Humphreys, director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth at The University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, said Georgia’s sluggish recovery reflects the recession’s impact here compared with the rest of the country.

Regents on smoking, USS Georgia and new Churchill exhibit here

OCT. 3, 2014 — Hurrah for the Georgia Board of Regents, the prestigious body that governs the University System of Georgia. In recent action, the Regents are requiring that its 31 public colleges and universities prohibit the use of tobacco products on its campuses. That’s a big, positive step. After all, the nearly 300,000 students of the University System of Georgia are on campus during their formative years. If this program can cut down on smoking as the students are maturing, it could provide better health for them and for our state for years and years.

Teachers grade Common Core: C+ and room for improvement
A survey of teachers on Common Core education standards showed mixed results. Half of teachers surveyed think Common Core standards help students with critical thinking, but their enthusiasm has waned.
By Stacy Teicher Khadaroo
Teachers feel more prepared to teach the Common Core State Standards and are already starting to see students improve their critical thinking skills. But the enthusiasm has dipped since last year, and only half say the new standards will be positive for most students. Those are some key findings in a survey of 1,676 K-12 teachers in the 43 states that have adopted Common Core, released Friday by Scholastic and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
