Incoming UGA president says he won’t take a backseat role in athletics
By Seth Emerson
ATHENS – Jere Morehead was officially confirmed on Monday as UGA’s next president, a job that entails many duties and challenges, which he outlined in his opening statement. Then the first question from a media member was about sports. And, about a half-hour later, so was the last one. And in between, I threw one in too. As Morehead himself pointed out, it’s the SEC, athletics cannot be ignored. And Morehead, while not carrying the reputation of his predecessor for being involved in athletics, vowed not to be a spectator.

Georgia Tech and Coursera Try to Recover From MOOC Stumble
By Steve Kolowich
When Fatimah Wirth decided to teach a massive open online course about how to run a virtual classroom successfully, she did not expect it to turn into a case study for the opposite. But after a series of design flaws and technical glitches turned Ms. Wirth’s MOOC, “Fundamentals of Online Education: Planning and Application,” into an Internet punch line, the instructional designer and her colleagues at the Georgia Institute of Technology decided on Saturday to suspend the course.

Oh, the irony: Coursera suspends online course about how to run an online course
by Ki Mae Heussner
A Coursera instructor offering an online course on how to manage an online course has apparently given her students – all 40,000 of them – an unintentional lesson on how not to do just that. Just a week after its launch, a course on the “Fundamentals of Online Learning” was suspended after complaints by students about technical glitches, confusing instructions and problems with the group-oriented design of the class. Led by Fatimah Wirth, an instructional designer at the Georgia Institute of Technology, the class was intended to cover online pedagogy, course design, assessment, web tools and other relevant topics.

Robots Vs. Jobs: Jobs Win
Think Again: Smart Applications Of Automation And Robotics Save And Create Jobs. Proposed Institutes For Manufacturing Innovation Could Advance Manufacturing More Quickly.
Mark T. Hoske
Robots are motion-controlled automation. Automation and robots create jobs. When automation and robotics are discussed and applied without appropriate communications, they make some plant-floor workers worry about continued employment. Truth is (and this isn’t necessarily intuitive when robots are first introduced to a site), automation saves manufacturing and other high-technology jobs. When automation is applied correctly, employees feel more valued and secure… To lower costs and be more competitive, manufacturers often look at offshoring (not as economical as once thought) or using automation and robotics to keep assembly and other jobs here, said Henrik I. Christensen, Kuka Chair of Robotics at the College of Computing, Georgia Institute of Technology. Christensen, also the director of the Center for Robotics and Intelligent Machines, was a keynote presenter for the combined events.

A manufacturing renaissance in North America
Advances in automation technologies continue to fuel efficiencies on the packaging line, helping to bring some previously off-shored production back to the U.S.
Lisa McTigue Pierce, Executive Editor — Packaging Digest
On Jan. 13, 2013, “60 Minutes” aired a segment titled “March of the Machines” which asked—and answered—the question “Are robots hurting job growth?” MIT professors Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson say yes. Although manufacturing has picked up a bit in the U.S. since the Great Recession, what hasn’t returned to its former glory is the number of jobs—partly because of technology and increased automation… According to Dr. Henrik Christensen, KUKA chair of robotics and director of robotics at Georgia Institute of Technology, “Studies have shown that 1.3 better, higher paying jobs are created in associated areas for every one job that may be insourced. In fact, the larger issue is companies are having trouble finding qualified employees to fill these high tech job openings. We instead should focus on how best to educate our workforce in the United States so that we can remain the leader in automation technologies.”

SAVANNAH, GA. – Crouched inside a square, 3-foot-deep excavation hole, Blake Ayala carefully scraped a sample of red-brown dirt into a small baggie. Nearly a dozen high school and college students looked on that Saturday afternoon as the 23-year-old Georgia Southern University graduate student listed measurements, noting the changing colors of the decades-old dirt layers in the arched vault along Factors’ Walk just east of City Hall.
Through a partnership between the university and the city of Savannah, Ayala is leading the archaeological survey of the four-vault structure beneath Bay Street, known as the Cluskey Embankment Stores.
