Sport Management minor coming to GHC in fall 2023

The Atrium Health Floyd School of Health Sciences at Georgia Highlands College (GHC) will offer a minor in Sport Management beginning in the fall of 2023. With this program, students will gain the inside scoop on the industry and develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a growing field.

Sport Management professionals work in a wide range of settings, including professional and amateur sports teams, sports marketing and advertising agencies, sports equipment and apparel manufacturers, sports media outlets, as well as sports facilities and venues.

“From event management to marketing and sponsorship, this minor covers all aspects of the sports industry,” Division Chair for Kinesiology and Wellness Luke Mashburn said. “With the right education and experience, sport management graduates can pursue careers in sports marketing, sports media, sports facilities management, event management and athlete representation.”

Students can expect to gain hands-on experience and make connections in the sports industry. GHC has partnerships with local sports organizations, including minor league baseball teams, college athletics and other sports-related businesses. In addition, the college hosts events and workshops that bring industry professionals to campus to meet with students and share their experiences.

“These partnerships provide students with internships and other practical learning opportunities to help them build their resumes and gain valuable experience,” Mashburn said.

Instructors in the pathway include former college athletes, coaches and administrators. Our instructors have worked in National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I and II sports, with professional teams including Atlanta United, and with professional leagues including Major League Baseball.

Popular career paths in Sport Management include sports marketing, sports media, sports facilities management, event management and athlete representation.
