Abstract: “Hip-Hop Saved My Life: Servant Leadership and Building Communities Through Hip Hop”
This presentation explores how Hip-Hop serves as a conduit for servant leadership, resilience, and self-empowerment by addressing the mental, emotional, and societal struggles that impact struggling communities. Through an analysis of key songs from artists such as Sa-Roc, Kendrick Lamar, and Mos Def, the discussion highlights themes of trauma, mental health, self-love, and triumph over adversity. Each selected track illustrates the power of storytelling in Hip-Hop to reflect lived experiences and foster a sense of identity, agency, and hope.
By connecting the narratives embedded in these lyrics to broader discussions about mental health awareness and emotional literacy, the presentation demonstrates how Hip-Hop offers a space for healing, service, and communal solidarity. Biography:
Montu is widely recognized as a true force within the vibrant Athens Hip-Hop Community, and throughout Northeast Georgia. Known as the Ambassador of this thriving movement, he exemplifies the essence of dedication, passion, and creativity. Montu’s influence extends beyond music, as he is a beloved teacher at Cedar Shoals High School, where he imparts knowledge and wisdom to his students with unwavering commitment. Additionally, he serves as a Chess and Community Conference Board member, UGA Alumni (BA ’20), Visiting Scholar for UGA Social Studies program, Piedmont University Alumni (MAT ’23), Athens Cultural Affairs Commission member, and proud father of five. Combined with his wife, Ymmilia “Pooh” Miller, they make a power couple that has knocked down many barriers.
Montu’s multifaceted identity encompasses his roles as a writer, poet, mentor, and community organizer. With an unwavering belief in the power of education, he wholeheartedly embraces his position as an educator, nurturing young minds and encouraging their personal growth. He goes above and beyond the classroom, utilizing spoken word and writing to inspire and motivate others throughout the community of Athens.
