Applied Studio Practices class creates wall-sized mural at Cartersville

Art Instructor Chelsea Carver, along with students Alyssa Jones, Cameron Brown, and Kyle Garriga, recently completed a wall-sized mural at the Cartersville A building. This experiential learning opportunity ran the gamut of what artists will encounter in the field.

The process of the mural took a number of months, with the idea being born in the summer of 2024 before being introduced to students in the Applied Studio Practices class in August.

The “client” in this case was Dean of Cartersville Leslie Johnson. The artists were asked to do a mural that would make a good photo op location that fit the vibe of the campus. That’s when the idea of a vintage postcard was suggested.

Students began formulating preliminary ideas and planning a general theme for the mural, sketching individual ideas and presenting them to the Dean and GHC President Mike Hobbs.

Once the all the sketch ideas were narrowed down and the supplies arrived, the first step was to prime the wall. Then, the artists had to get the sketch on the wall.

“Students really wanted to project the image on the wall and trace it, but the space was too narrow to do so,” Carver said. “I taught students a gridding method, and we gridded and sketched. We’re so excited to see it complete.”
