Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker to Shorter

GHC volleyball kicked off their sophomore campaign Tuesday night at NCAA Division II Shorter University. The Chargers lost a thriller of a first set 25-23 and threatened in the third set, but ultimately the Hawks took all three for a 3-0 win in the Winthrop-King Center.

Set 1 was a back-and-forth affair. With both teams holding 20 points each, the Chargers rattled off back-to-back points and looked poise to take its first set of the season. But the Hawks fought back for the eventual 25-23 win.

Shorter dominated set 2, but GHC regrouped for the third set and jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Shorter rallied back to jump ahead 10-5, and while the Chargers threatened multiple times the Hawks never relinquished the lead.

Truett-McConnell transfer and former Cartersville High standout Vanessa Johnson had 2 aces on the night. Lula Tolsma, Abbey Yates and Shorter transfer and another Cartersville High standout Jasmin Gomez also had aces. Tolsma, Victoria Perry, and freshmen Sheridan Johnson and Alissa Robinson also all had kills. Josie Tolsma led the team in digs.

Shorter visits GHC for the rematch next Wednesday at 7pm. It will be the home opener and first ever volleyball match at GHC’s Floyd Campus.
