CETL: March Events

Lab: Faculty Mindset

Asynchronous D2L Work: Tues, Mar 1 – Fri, Mar 4  |  Facilitator: Josie Baudier

Synchronous Wrap-Up Zoom Meeting: Fri, Mar 4  |  12:00-12:30 pm

CETL labs facilitate asynchronous hands-on engagement with pedagogical professional development over a four-day period in preparation for a culminating synchronous meeting. Participants in this lab should expect to work independently for 4 hours. We will explore the fixed and growth mindset and examine the influence of a faculty’s mindset on student success. We will discuss strategies to improve student mindsets through course design and class climate.

Teach Students (rather than content)

Mon, Mar 7  |  11:00 am – 12:15 pm  |  Zoom  |  Facilitator: Rachel Rupprecht

This is the first in CETL’s three-part “Rather Than” workshop series, in which we hone in on important yet challenging aspects of teaching. This time, we consider how to make our courses—especially those we have taught many times—student-centered. In this workshop you will learn what it means to make a course student-centered, why doing so matters, and how to do so.

Accessibility Lab: Media

Asynchronous D2L Work: Tues, Mar 8 – Fri, Mar 11  |  Facilitator: Rachel Rupprecht

Synchronous Wrap-Up Zoom Meeting: Fri, Mar 11  |  12:00-12:30 pm

CETL labs facilitate asynchronous hands-on engagement with pedagogical professional development over a four-day period in preparation for a culminating synchronous meeting. Participants in this lab should expect to work independently for 4 hours and will learn how to explain how accessibility regulations apply to their work, add appropriate alt-tags to images, caption and assess the production quality of a video, curate video resources, and embed a video in a D2L page.

Test what you Teach (rather than teach to the test)

Mon, Mar 14  |  11:00 am – 12:15 pm  |  Zoom  |  Facilitator: Rachel Rupprecht

This is the second in CETL’s three-part “Rather Than” workshop series, in which we hone in on important yet challenging aspects of teaching. This time, we consider how to design assignments that effectively facilitate and assess student learning. In this workshop you will learn the characteristics of effective assessments, common pitfalls in assessment design, and how to design assessments that help students learn and evaluate whether they have done so.

Grade Smarter (rather than harder)

Mon, Mar 21  |  11:00 am – 12:15 pm  |  Zoom  |  Facilitator: Rachel Rupprecht

This is the third in CETL’s three-part “Rather Than” workshop series, in which we hone in on important yet challenging aspects of teaching. This time, we consider how to evaluate student performance. In this workshop you will identify your preferred grading framework and learn best practices for creating grading criteria and rubrics, how to create analytic and holistic D2L rubrics, and strategies to maximize your grading efficiency.

Lab: Educational Technology

Asynchronous D2L Work: Tues, Mar 22 – Fri, Mar 25  |  Facilitator: Rachel Rupprecht

Synchronous Wrap-Up Zoom Meeting: Fri, Mar 25  |  12:00-12:30 pm
