Charger Women Cruise to Conference Win
The Lady Chargers entered Wednesday’s contest against the Lady Tigers of Andrew College riding a 2-game GCAA winning streak. The team was looking to wrap up the 2019 portion of their GCAA schedule on a winning note and solidify their 2nd place standing in the conference.
The first quarter saw the teams stay close as the Lady Chargers held a small 17-12 lead. The GHC Women were able to get things going in the 2nd quarter and extend their lead to 41-23 going into the half. Coming out of the break, Andrew was able to match GHC shot-for-shot as the 3rd quarter ended with the score 61-43 in GHC’s favor. However, the 4thquarter was not kind to the visiting team. GHC outscored the Lady Tigers 30-4 in the quarter to blow the game wide open. When the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Chargers had cruised to a 91-47 GCAA conference win.
Ja’Lyn Reese continued her strong season with a game-high 25 points, including 16 in the 2nd half. O’Mariyah Tucker also had another strong game off the bench with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Jahnaria Brown also registered a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, perhaps foreshadowing the upcoming Friday the 13th. Sasha Shishkina and Nijeria Jordan both added 11 to round out the Chargers in double-figures.
With the win, GHC’s record now stands at 7-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference. The Women return to action this Saturday (12/14) against Chattahoochee Valley Community College at 2:00PM in the Corral. This is the team’s last home game of 2019 so make sure to come out and cheer them on as they head into the holiday break.
Charger Men Race Past New Rock Prep
The Charger Men were looking to grab another win during their current 4-game home stand as they faced off with New Rock Prep on Wednesday night at the Corral. Coach Merritt expected a tough contest from the visitors but in the end, the close contest he expected never materialized. While New Rock stayed within striking distance through the early part of the first half, the Chargers ultimately raced out to a 21-point halftime lead on their way to an unexpected 55-point victory.
After a first half that saw the Men shoot almost 60% from the floor and 47% from three, a second-half let-down may have been expected. Except in the second half, everything seemed to go the way of the Chargers. The team shot an amazing 74% from the floor, which included a number of highlight-reel dunks and 7-13 from behind the arc. On the other side, New Rock struggled, shooting just 33% from the floor and 1-8 from three. This combination allowed the Chargers to run away with the contest by the final score of 130-75.
Trevin Wade scored a game-high 23 points to lead 8 Chargers in double-figures. Nicholas Huteau added 15 points and 5 rebounds, while Jamal Burke added 14 points to pace the starting 5. The bench for the Chargers was a big part of the victory, outscoring their counterparts 62-37 for the game. Xzavier Howard had 17 points and 7 boards and Cahiem Brown added 12 points and a game-high 8 assists. Rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Chargers were Langston Wilson, RJ Campbell, and Felix Gue each with 10 points. Coach Merritt also highlighted the unselfish play of Carl Johnson who had a solid all-around stat line of 7 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The Chargers improved to 7-4 overall as the team rides a 4-game winning streak. The Chargers next take on Action Sports Academy this Saturday at 4:00PM in the Corral following the GHC Women’s game. Like the Lady Chargers, this is the Men’s last home game of 2019. Let’s pack the Corral and show the teams our support.
