Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will host its first Day of Service, a day dedicated to ABAC students, staff and faculty volunteering in the community, on August 14 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Requests were taken from June 26 to July 24 from churches, nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals for service projects. Trent Hester, ABAC’s residents’ life coordinator, said that organizations like Beulah Hill Baptist Church, Fullwood Garden Center, Forrest Lakes Golf Course, YMCA and Paw Paradise Pet Boarding were selected for a range of service projects. …“As part of the ABAC mission, we want our students to graduate and be ready to fully engage in their chosen community,” Hester said. “The first step in helping them engage with the Tifton community is to get them out and engaged in their new hometown.” And while the Day of Service will be beneficial to those volunteering, it will also be a way to support and care for the community itself. …While this is the first year of the Day of Service, Hester and others at ABAC said they anticipate that this will become an annual event.

East Georgia State College Associate Dean of eLearning Dr. Dee McKinney and Research and Instruction Librarian Katie Shepard were awarded their second Affordable Learning Georgia grant this year. The two worked on the grant through Spring and Summer semesters and will finish the project at the end of Fall semester. The duo’s first grant was to adapt one of EGSC’s history classes, HIST 1111: Western Civilization to 1648, to use no-cost materials. This second grant will be used to adapt the second half of the history survey classes, HIST 1112: Western Civilization Since 1648, to also use no-cost materials. The course uses primary source documents and narrated PowerPoint presentations as well as online videos to engage the students. The first course and the current courses’ materials will be available through ALG to be used by other institutions for free as well.
