The Dept. of Student Life continues the Black History Month programs with a special performance from award-winning spoken word artist ED MABREY at all five GHC locations next week.

Who is ED MABREY?
Just Ed. Or Edward. Never Eddie (he’s saving that one for marriage!). He’s been the overweight kid, the low self-esteem kid, the poor body-image pushed around kid. The kid from a big ghetto in a small town who saw a lot at a young age. The kid afraid of what others thought of him, of what they thought about the color of his skin, his hair, even his voice. Then he learned something: The World needs more than superheroes. It needs YOU.
About Ed’s POETRY:
Ed crafts his sets to get the core of an audience, the emotion. All of us have them. Ed’s work, whether funny poems about his son, his mon, where he grew up; poems about how to address racism, body shaming, homophobia, suicide, drug and alcohol culture, bullying – all of his work forces us to rethink how we see each other. And that makes us all a little more human. Which brings us all closer together. He is a performer and writer that has elevated poetry to performed art…just as it should be.
What had Ed done?
Well for starters, he’s the winningest (yes, we might have made that word up) poet in slam history. The only FOUR TIME Individual World Poetry Slam Champion. Two time Southern Fried Regional Individual Poetry Slam Champion. Lake Eden Arts Festival Slam Champion (about 8 of those). Rust Belt Regional Poetry Slam Champion (a couple of those). Two time Ink Slam Champion. Rough Language Slam Champion (at least 6 of those), etc. etc. etc. (see? WINNINGEST.)
Anything else about ED?
He’s been a speaker at TedX2015 and TedX2017 conferences, you’ve seen him on Verses and Flow (seasons 3, 5, & 6 on TVOne), HBO, FOX, ABC, BET, and Crackle. He’s an EMMY winner with MOTW, an individual EMMY nominee, a New York Times Best Selling author, a Watering Hole Alum. He’s performed and taught around the globe and at over 150 colleges & universities across the U.S. He’s performed with many artists from Saul Williams, The Roots, Dick Gregory, Buddy Wakefield, Andrea Gibson, Jill Scott Heron, Amiri Baraka, and The Last Poets (just to name a few).
This is a great companion event to supplement a number of academic study areas such as English and Literature, Creative Writing, Communications, Psychology, Sociology, Music, Business, Political Science, Education, Human Services, and others. Extra credit sign-in sheets will be available for students if instructors would like to encourage students to attend for extra credit.
