The Lady Chargers knew going in that the #1 ranked and defending NJCAA National Champion Gulf Coast Lady Commodores we be a tough opponent. GHC faced the Lady Commodores last year in the second round of the national tournament and battled them to the wire. GHC keep the game close early trailing 23-17 after the 1st period, but Gulf Coast started pulling away in the 2nd period leading by 12 points at the half 38-26.
The Lady Chargers battled back early in the third period cutting Gulf Coast lead to 8 but that was as close as they would get. Gulf Coast’s Maria Castro was unstoppable ending the night with 26 points and 7 rebounds. Gulf Coast was 32/57 from the field for 56.1% compared to GHC’s 21/60 for 35%
GHC (3-5) was led by Pam Diokpara with her third straight double / double, 15 points and 12 rebounds. D’Andra Pringle had 12 points, Brianna Davis and Kerry Watson both ended the night with 9 points.
The second round of the Georgia Highlands College Lady Charger Classic will continue tomorrow with Roane State taking on #1 Gulf Coast at 12:00pm followed by #5 Walters State taking on Atlanta Metro at 2:00pm and #22 GHC taking on # 12 Northwest Florida at 4:00pm
