Sexual Assault Prevention Seminar
Fri., Nov. 13th 9am-12:30pm
KSU-Marietta Recreational Center
Session 1: Bystander Intervention Workshop
“Have you ever you ever had the opportunity to help someone in a potentially harmful situation, but you did not know what to do? If you were being harassed or disrespected, what would you want a bystander to do for you?
There are various reasons why we don’t intervene when we see others in uncomfortable situations. Through active learning experiences and awareness education, bystanders can build the necessary skills for taking action. Bystander Intervention is a vital element in preventing sexual misconduct and/or violence. By addressing unacceptable behavior consistently, we create a cultural shift of societal norms surrounding sexual misconduct and sexual violence.
This workshop will address:
Awareness. We will discuss and define terms of sexual misconduct and sexual violence.
Active Bystanders. What does it mean to be an active bystander? What is your responsibility to help strangers and those that you know? We will discuss what it means to be an active bystander and the sense of responsibility and motivation needed to step in and help.
Societal Norms. People often assume that someone else will help others when potentially harmful situations arise. We will discuss research behind this train of thought and how we can shift societal norms through action.
Options for Action. What are challenges to bystanders intervening when they witness potentially harmful situations occurring? We will discuss challenges to intervening and options for overcoming these challenges.
Skill Building. Oftentimes, bystanders want to assist but do not know how to properly intervene. We will practice building skills to properly equip bystanders with knowledge and skills to intervene, protect themselves, and to be supportive of others.
