University of Georgia President Jere Morehead is donating a portion of his pay to establish a new scholarship fund for hands-on learning for students at the state’s flagship institution. The $100,000 donation, announced Wednesday, will create an endowment for the school’s experiential learning initiative announced earlier this year. Beginning next fall, the initiative will require undergraduate students to participate in some type of research, study abroad, service-learning or other type of tailored learning before graduating. … In addition to the new scholarship donation, Morehead also makes annual financial contributions to the Morehead Honors Support Fund in the UGA Honors Program, the Jere W. Morehead Moot Court Fund in the UGA law school and the Wade and Virginia Morehead need-based scholarship fund for students participating in the UGA Washington Semester Program.

Sex Assault Bill Would Lift OCR Funding, Require Climate Surveys
https://www.insidehighered.com/quicktakes/2015/06/05/sex-assault-bill-would-lift-ocr-funding-require-climate-surveys
WASHINGTON — Two lawmakers introduced a bill on Thursday designed to combat sexual assault on college campuses. The bipartisan bill, introduced by Representatives Jackie Speier, a Democrat from California, and Patrick Meehan, a Republican from Pennsylvania, would provide $5 million per year in additional funding to the Department of Education’s understaffed Office for Civil Rights; require the department to issue stiff penalties for colleges that don’t comply with the nondiscrimination law Title IX; increase penalties for violating the Clery Act, which requires colleges to disclose information on campus crimes, from $35,000 to $100,000; and require colleges to conduct biennial climate surveys. The bill, called the Hold Accountable and Lend Transparency (HALT) Campus Sexual Violence Act, would also create an interagency task force to increase coordination between the agencies dealing with campus sexual assault, and require colleges to sign memorandums of understanding with local police.

Colleges and Graduates, Survey Says…
https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/06/05/new-national-survey-aims-set-baseline-postgraduation-outcomes
By Jacqueline Thomsen
For the first time, the postcollege outcomes of recent graduates have been collected and analyzed by a national organization using data gathered by more than 200 higher education institutions, all using the same methodology. A new survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers used data from 207 of its member institutions to determine the outcomes of roughly 274,000 graduates in the class of 2014. Officials behind the survey hope the results can set a baseline for where college graduates go once they leave the classroom and the consistent data may help others to determine trends in both labor and higher education.

Becoming a Renaissance CBO
https://www.insidehighered.com/advice/2015/06/05/chief-business-officers-must-broaden-their-skills-and-roles-essay
By Thomas Ayers and Karen Goldstein
Like most campus administrators in higher education today, chief business officers are expected to handle a significantly wider-ranging role, work with a much more diverse set of constituents and possess a broader set of skills than ever before. The role of the CBO has always been quite broad, often with responsibility for all aspects of finance, human resources, facilities, auxiliary services, information technology, campus police and risk management. However, the new pressures facing colleges today have brought both new and expanded responsibilities, including helping to guide strategic planning and associated implementation, developing entrepreneurial partnerships to create new revenue streams, developing plans for emergency preparedness and Title IX compliance, working collaboratively with other campus leaders to build cross-functional teams to provide more effective services, integrating resource allocation efforts with planning and outcome assessment, and serving as an educator and champion of transparency with all constituent groups regarding institutional financial health.

Why Wisconsin Matters to You
https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2015/06/05/move-undermine-tenure-wisconsin-has-national-implications-essay
By Nicholas Hillman
What happens in Wisconsin will not stay in Wisconsin. Lawmakers here are moving quickly to hollow out the definition of tenure and strip away due process rights for faculty members and academic staff. For legislators in other states who want to dismantle public higher education, they might look here to find new plays for their playbooks. It is not uncommon for legislators to threaten tenure or criticize public education — many do it for sport. But what’s unique in Wisconsin is that the proposed tenure changes are not coming from a fringe coalition: they are coming from the Joint Finance Committee, the most powerful body in the Legislature. I am a tenure-track faculty member in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison and have been in the state for only two years. I have a lot to learn and am naively optimistic that cooler heads will prevail and the tenure threats will wash over in time. But I cannot bring myself to a place of comfort; I am truly worried. And I am not just worried for Wisconsin, but for other states that will follow suit if this change actually happens.
