Tornado (severe weather) response

Tornado Response:

1. When Campus Safety has been alerted of a tornado watch by the warning receiver, or weather conditions indicate the possibility of a tornado, the weather radio, local radio or television station should be tuned in and monitored for updated weather information.

a) Continue normal activities. An email alert will be sent by Campus Safety.

b) Send pre-designated tornado spotters to central point. The spotter should have a clear view of the south and west (the direction from which tornadoes usually come) or the direction of approach of threatening weather.

c) When a tornado warning is received take emergency procedures at once.

d) If there is sufficient time, Campus Safety will:

i) Issue warning through GHC Notify.

ii) Everyone on campus not in a designated area will immediately go to a pre-designated location indicated by signs for their area.

iii) Cover your head, face, and upper torso with anything that can help protect you from flying debris.

e) If there is insufficient time to take shelter:

i) Go to an inside wall of the room away from windows, a corner being best.

ii) Cover your head.

iii) Squat on floor next to wall or get under stable furniture or equipment.

iv) If out in the open, go to a ditch, ravine or indented area, lie face down and cover your head.

Recovery:

After the storm has passed:
a. Account for all persons from your area.
b. Determine if anyone is injured and provide medical help if needed. Call Campus Safety or 911 for assistance.
c. Use extreme caution:
i. Gas leaks and downed power lines create special hazards.
a. If emergency help is necessary call Campus Safety.
ii. Do not re-enter severely damaged buildings and protect yourself at all times.
