Recent Georgia Regents University graduate Layla Boyd may have just closed her college chapter, but she is still waiting to turn the next page on her career. Before receiving her diploma less than two weeks ago, the mother of three sent more than half a dozen applications to local hospitals and healthcare centers, trying to put her new bachelor’s degree in social work to use. Boyd said she’s had one callback, and that was to inform her that she didn’t land the job. …Boyd was one of about 1,100 graduates from GRU on May 9. Her plight in finding work is all too familiar for recent college graduates, according to experts.

Tech-Enabled Courses Aren’t Living Up to Promises in Higher Ed
By Sonali Basak
Online technologies are falling short of their promises in delivering affordable education to the masses, educators are finding. So-called MOOCs, or massive open online courses, are attracting students who are already educated and already working instead of the millions of students without access to higher education, according to a more than 200-page report released yesterday by Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Higher ed becoming a joke: Column

American colleges are fraught with petty politics and bad economics.
As college graduates around the country fling their caps into the air, college and university administrators are ending the year in a less positive state. It has been a tough year for higher education in America, and it’s not especially likely that next year will be a lot better. As an industry, higher education is beset with problems, problems that for the most part aren’t being addressed. One set of problems is economic.

The Erosion of Faculty Rights
by Colleen Lye and James Vernon
In the rush to online education, faculty members have been signing contracts that abrogate the ownership of their classes, erode their collective interests, and threaten the quality of higher education. No standard (let alone best) practice has yet emerged, and faculty members are largely in the dark about what is at stake. Put simply, the stakes are huge. Online education is the new frontier where the traditional rights of faculty members and the quality of instruction are up for grabs. It is a frontier that threatens to turn all faculty members, including those on the tenure track, into teachers who “work for hire.”

UMass’s Caret on how to get a 4-year degree for $30K

Robert Caret, the president of UMass, has at least two things for him in his role of steering the state’s university system. One, he has a knack for selling his ideas to politicians, no ordinarily skill. Second, he has extensive experience in public higher education in California and Maryland, states that traditionally have received more taxpayer support and have developed coordinated higher education models that help usher students from community colleges to the state colleges and universities. Under Caret’s leadership, last year the Legislature approved a plan to boost funding at UMass in exchange for keeping a lid on tuition. Now Caret is looking at the potential of the community colleges to lower costs and expand opportunities. He believes a total price tag of $30,000 for a four-year degree is possible.

In a surprising move, a commencement speaker at Haverford College on Sunday used the celebratory occasion to deliver a sharp rebuke to students who had mounted a campaign against another speaker who had been scheduled to appear but withdrew amid the controversy. Bowen, former president of Princeton and a nationally respected higher education leader, called the student protestors’ approach both “immature” and “arrogant” and the subsequent withdrawal of Robert J. Birgeneau, former chancellor of the University of California Berkeley, a “defeat” for the Quaker college and its ideals.

Evaluating Evaluations
By Colleen Flaherty
To the many professors who say that student course evaluation data play too big a role in promotion and tenure decisions, a new study might come as both good news and bad. On the one hand, faculty evaluations seem to be getting more holistic, with deans gathering data from an increasing number of sources to assess professor performance. On the other hand, student evaluation results are playing a role in promotion and tenure decisions at more and more colleges.

How buying cooperatives decide which new categories to offer, and how institutions can benefit
By: Nancy Mann Jackson

When it became clear that the scientific equipment in hundreds of labs across the University of Pittsburgh campus was not being maintained effectively, professionals in the university procurement department began looking for a new provider to do the job. The university had long relied on a purchasing cooperative to secure favorable contracts with vendors for bulk products such as office supplies. When administrators discovered that the cooperative had established an agreement with Specialty Underwriters (SU), a provider of equipment maintenance, their search was over.
