Colleagues,
If at all possible, please plan to attend the upcoming celebration at our students’ graduation activities on Thursday, May 15, 2014:
• NURSES’ PINNING – 2:00 p.m. at The Forum, 2 Government Plaza, Downtown Rome, GA
This is a traditional service for nursing students to receive their professional pins and to be welcomed into the field of nursing.
• FACULTY and STAFF APPRECIATION DINNER – 4:00-6:00 p.m. at The Partridge Restaurant, 330 Broad Street, Downtown Rome, GA
This will require a reservation. If you wish and can attend, please go to GraduationDinnerRSVP@highlands.edu to register for the event.
At the dinner, awards will be presented for Department of the Year, Employee of the Year, Faculty of the Year, and retirees will be honored.
• GRADUATION – 7:00 p.m. at The Forum
All students will participate in graduation this year, including nursing graduates.
A few notes:
1. To encourage as many as possible to participate in this joyous occasion and to accommodate travel and an evening event, I ask that you work with your supervisor on work flexibility. Unfortunately, spring grades are due at noon on that day, with important financial aid processes to be run thereafter. In addition, the summer application deadline is that day, and we expect brisk traffic from the public because of it. With The Forum’s limited availability, this year’s week night graduation will pose challenges for some.
2. Our graduation speaker will be Dr. Tyrone Bledsoe, Founder and CEO, Student African American Brotherhood (SAAB). Regent Scott Smith will bring greetings from the Board of Regents, and we will honor the Wesley C. Walraven Faculty Award and the President’s Meritorious Service Award recipients, as well as the 2014 Mace Bearer. These announcements are forthcoming shortly.
3. I am told that this year’s number of graduates could set a record; already over 620 students have applied for graduation.
4. Shuttle service will be available throughout the day from Broad Street to The Forum.
5. The Third Avenue Parking Deck (adjacent to The Forum) will be available for free parking.
6. Dr. Musselwhite will follow this message with pertinent information for faculty regarding time and place for robing and other specifics.
These are exciting times for Georgia Highlands College!
