Students protest regents’ ban on illegal immigrants
BY LAURA DIAMOND – THE ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION
Students brought to this country illegally have again challenged a state Board of Regents policy that bars them from attending Georgia’s most competitive public colleges. About 200 people participated in a rally at the Capitol Wednesday and students plan to file a lawsuit as soon as Thursday. …Attorney Charles Kuck said he will file the lawsuit on behalf of deferred action students. “These students have put their lives on hold and can no longer wait,” Kuck said. “These kids are tired of being political pawns.”

Informal ‘White Student Union’ started at Georgia State
By Laura Diamond
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Fall semester won’t start for several weeks, but Georgia State University has already received a handful of complaints about a new student club — the White Student Union. Freshman Patrick Sharp said he started the club so that students of European and Euro-American descent can celebrate their shared history and culture and discuss issues that affect white people, such as immigration and affirmative action.

Apple fixing bug that allows fake charging stations to hack iPhones
By Jim Finkle
Apple Inc’s next software update for its iPhones and iPads will fix a security flaw that allows hackers to engage in spying and cyber crimes when the victim connects the device to a fake charging station, the company said on Wednesday. Apple’s devices are vulnerable to attacks until the company releases its iOS 7 software update, which is slated for this fall… The work was done by Billy Lau, a research scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, and graduate students Yeongjin Jang and Chengyu Song.

Why Georgia DREAMers Had to Sue The Board of Regents For In-State Tuition for DACA Recipients
Ever since the Department of Homeland Security announced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”) program the question has been asked in Georgia by DACA recipients, can I now pay “in-state” tuition at Georgia Colleges and Universities? The question is simple, and the answer should be simple too. But, the Georgia Board of Regents has failed in its job to help ALL Georgia residents who qualify get the education they want and deserve. For more than seven months now, it has been clear that the Georgia Board of Regents must allow DACA beneficiaries to pay in-state tuition, by the words of their own Policy Manual, but has failed to do so.

White student unions: Idea spreads to Georgia State
A white student union founded at Towson University in Maryland has inspired a similar group at Georgia State University. The founder of the informal GSU white student union says, “All we want to do is celebrate white identity. This is about being in touch with who you are as a white person and being proud of that.” However, the Maryland progenitor holds loftier ambitions. Its founder says his motivation is to “stop our systematic genocide.”

SOMETIMES one wonders if Northwest Georgians know where they are, economically speaking. This is a region that surprises for far more than its natural beauties and friendly folks. It is one that hears constantly that it has bright prospects, without realizing it is already the sunshine that is making the rest of the state look good. …Greater Romans know that health care and education outfits are the largest employers hereabouts.

The Doctrine of Common Core: Raising Public Education Standards Does Little in Our Modern Economy
by Ali M. Hangan
Thomas Jefferson once said, “If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” For a large part of the 20th century, public education has been wedded to economic opportunity and the ideals of a participatory democracy. Common core, to a large extent, is premised on linking education to economic opportunity to democracy and based on assumptions of a 20th century school to work model. But that is not the world we live in today.

Do the math — Common Core = a massive, risky experiment on your kids
By Dr. James Milgram, Emmett McGroarty
Controversy is swirling about the new Common Core national standards, which are designed to transform K-12 education in English language arts and math. Especially in the area of math, Common Core proponents insist that it is the only way to address the problem of lagging achievement by American students. But the Common Core math standards fall far short of what students need for more advanced work.

WASHINGTON — A bipartisan bill that would reduce the costs of borrowing for millions of students passed the House on Wednesday and was heading to President Barack Obama for his signature.
The legislation links student loan interest rates to the financial markets, offering lower rates for most students now but higher ones down the line if the economy improves as expected.

States Offer Students an Incentive to Graduate: Money

MOOC Bill Dead for Now
By Ry Rivard
A controversial California bill to pass off untold thousands of state college students to nontraditional providers of instruction, some of them for-profit or unaccredited, is dead for now. The bill, unveiled in March by a powerful California lawmaker, initially would have required the state’s 145 public colleges and universities to grant credit for low-cost online courses offered by outside groups, including for-profits companies, among them the providers of massive open online courses, or MOOCs.

B-School Year Gets Off to an Earlier Start
Summer Becomes Prime Time for Orientation, Polishing Job-Hunting Skills
By ANITA HOFSCHNEIDER
August has barely begun, but for some business-school students, the school year is already in full swing. Schools are summoning first-year students to campus ever earlier. On Monday, 215 students turned up at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business for orientation. The University of California at Davis Graduate School of Management held the first part of its orientation last week. The idea, administrators say, is to better prepare M.B.A. students for facing recruiters, improving their chances of landing coveted internships and job opportunities.

NY Attorney General Sues Over SUNY Pay Fraud Claim
by Associated Press
ALBANY, N.Y. — New York’s attorney general has sued a former state university executive and the daughter of a once-prominent legislative leader, claiming they filed fraudulent time sheets that cost the state $165,000. A complaint filed Tuesday in Albany says John O’Connor allowed Susan Bruno to file reports overstating the hours she worked on 47 occasions after she was hired in 2003 at the Research Foundation of the State University of New York.
