Lizards Will Teach Robots to Swim Through Sand
Scientists at Georgia Tech develop a model called terradynamics to predict how an animal like a -lizard—or a machine modeled after a lizard—will move through a loose granular material such as sand.
By Andrew Moseman
As Curiosity cruises around the surface of Mars, it must be careful. Although the Mars Science Laboratory rover is larger and tougher than previous rovers, its drivers still want to be sure they don’t get the bot’s wheels stuck in a deep sand dune. Imagine, though, if humans put a robot on -another planet that didn’t drive on wheels but instead walked on legs, allowing it to step over and out of obstacles. The tiny 5-inch bot that scientists in Daniel Goldman’s lab at Georgia Tech are experimenting with could help lead the way to those kinds of machines.

Here’s lobbying reform: Cut gifts to zero and pass Senate version
by Don McKee
Columnist
Georgia House Speaker David Ralston’s lobbying reform bill has been drastically rewritten by the Senate Rules Committee, which yesterday approved its version that cuts more loopholes and maintains the free speech rights of Georgia citizens who talk to their legislators about issues of concern. …The Senate bill would permit lobbyist spending only for events open to the entire legislature — for example, the highly popular annual Wild Hog Supper preceding the beginning of each General Assembly. But the bill would tighten travel spending, allowing lobbyists to foot the bill only for domestic travel related to an elected official’s duties, prohibiting lobbyists from paying for trips out of the country or for travel by a legislator’s family and staff — a la the famous European junket several years ago by Ralston with family and staff.

Education gains in proposed budget

The Georgia General Assembly is approaching the final stretch with the finish line in sight for the 2013 legislative session. With an aggressive calendar throughout this session, legislators could return home to our districts before April. Following the constitutional mandate to balance Georgia’s budget, we passed the House version of the budget, HB 106. The FY 2014 state budget totals $19,864,261,481 in state funds, a number set by the governor’s forward-looking revenue estimate. This budget will direct spending for all state agencies, departments, and programs from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.
