Human Communication COMM 1100 with Allison Hattaway - CRN 80329 & CRN 81330

This section of Human Communication allows students to progress with work largely at their own pace, but also provides synchronous weekly meetings on campus and through Zoom. Students seeking a course with a blend of face-to-face meetings, synchronous Zoom meetings, and independent work time within D2L should find this course design a good fit.

Students are required to attend a minimum of six face-to-face meetings during which the course is introduced and speeches are presented to the class. These meetings are currently scheduled for 8/20, 10/1, 10/22, 10/29, 11/19, and 12/3 but are subject to change with advanced notice by instructor. All other class meetings will be held synchronously via Zoom. Students must have technology skills, including competence with D2L, a computer and reliable internet connection, a way to create a short digital video clip, MS Word, the ability work independently with good time management, and must successfully complete the required syllabus/orientation quiz given at the beginning of the semester.

I am readily available to answer questions by email within D2L or at ahattawa@highlands.edu. I will also be easily accessible by phone or Zoom if you prefer.

This face to face section of Human Communication allows students to gain proficiency in several forms of practical communication while completing the Area B Communication requirement. Students who prefer some interaction with other students and an instructor will find this section a good choice, while we also take precautions to protect your health: Small class size puts fewer people in the same room and social distancing will be practiced throughout the semester of in-person meetings on campus. This online section of Human Communication allows students to gain proficiency in several forms of practical communication while completing the Area B Communication requirement. Students will find content in D2L and in the required textbook, available in various formats, including as an electronic rental copy for $30 from the GHC Bookstore and also available at most online book retailers. The course design allows students to progress with work largely at their own pace, but also provides some synchronous options (Zoom, Google Hangouts) for students comfortable with video chat that want some live interaction with other students and an instructor. Content will be organized into modules in our online classroom, with separate submodules for written lectures, readings, supplemental materials, and assignments. I am readily available at sstuglin@highlands.edu and respond to emails on the same day. I am also available by Google Hangout (prof.steve.stuglin@gmail.com) and by Zoom for individual assistance. No in-person/campus attendance is required for this course.

Human Communication Comm 1100 with Tom Earp – CRN 80854

This course is an e-Classroom and will be delivered as a virtual classroom experience via Zoom for live, interactive, and participative learning, instruction, and coaching. The class will meet live (virtually) once a week via Zoom with additional course assignments, instruction and materials delivered via D2L to help students stay on track. In addition to class meetings, I will be available for office hours via Zoom to meet student needs. I will also make myself available via email and messaging as needed.

Students must have a reliable computer and internet connection as well as technology skills including, but not limited to, competence with D2L, Office 365, Zoom, MS Word and video recording and uploading. The required textbook Essential Communication (2nd edition), Adler, R., Rodman, C., & DuPre’, A. The textbook is required and can be purchased as a hard copy or it can be rented or purchased as an e-book for easier access and lower cost.

Additional outside materials will be provided. A significant amount of work for this class will be done independently by students through discussions and activities on D2L. Online participation will be critical to succeed in this class. Online class participation will include supplemental materials designed to enhance the material in the text, as well as group activities, speech presentations, and other assignments intended to encourage various forms of communication.
