The Bloomfield family recently reinvested in the dental hygiene program at Georgia Highlands College (GHC). The Cathryn E. Bloomfield Scholarship was established to honor their daughter, Cathy Bloomfield, who was enrolled in the dental hygiene program in the Fall of 1993.
After the untimely passing of Cathy in 1994, the family decided to support future dental hygiene students by creating a scholarship in Cathy’s name. The scholarship was established to support those in need financially and to allow Cathy’s passion and legacy to live on through others with the same dedication and commitment to the profession.
Current dental hygiene instructor and former classmate Angel Cargle spoke highly of her friend Cathy and her dedication to serving others.
“Cathy Bloomfield was a beacon of courage and determination during adversity. Her sweet, selfless dedication inspired her fellow students, patients and faculty,” Cargle said. “Cathy’s legacy continues to bring goodness to our school community, and her spirit will always remain in our hearts.”
In addition to the Bloomfield Scholarship, the program awards the Bloomfield Humanitarian Award to a graduating senior each year. This award is given to the student who best exemplifies the character and determination that Cathy demonstrated in her goal to become a dental hygienist.
“Cathy’s legacy continues to inspire GHC dental hygiene students through the scholarship in her name and the Bloomfield Humanitarian Award. Her inspirational life story and the attitude and determination that she demonstrated have a long-lasting impact on the lives of our faculty and students,” Regin Gupta, Director of the Dental Hygiene Program, said.
The Bloomfield family continues to support the program by attending events such as the Student American Dental Hygienists’ Association graduation celebration where they meet with recipients of the scholarship and of the Bloomfield Humanitarian Award.
Their dedication to supporting emerging dental hygienists is unwavering. In November of 2024, at the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Dental Hygiene at GHC, Mr. and Mrs. Bloomfield, along with their daughter, Cynthia Elsberry, Associate Professor at GHC, expressed their desire to support students in need, ensuring Cathy Bloomfield’s legacy endures through the success and growth of future professionals in the field of dental hygiene.
Georgia Highlands College is deeply honored to maintain such a meaningful and impactful partnership with the Bloomfield family. Current students with a FAFSA on file can apply for the Cathryn E. Bloomfield Scholarship and more through April 1 at highlands.awardspring.com
