Field Naming Celebration on October 20

Thank you to everyone who attended and supported Georgia Highlands College’s Field Naming Celebration on October 20!

It was a wonderful family event that marked the official dedication of our baseball and softball fields at the new GHC Athletic Complex between the GHC campus and the Savoy Automobile Museum in Cartersville.

We had a great time honoring Commander Bentley (pictured above) and Carol Brown alongside our students, alumni, and community.

You can view more pictures online or watch this video on YouTube. Read more about the event below, and keep up with all things GHC Athletics by visiting ghcchargers.com

The Carol Brown Softball Field

The new athletic complex includes fields for baseball and softball, a 5,000 square foot hitting facility, restrooms, concession stands, press boxes and other amenities expected for a true collegiate athletic experience. The fields are outfitted with TruHop, a turf designed especially for baseball and softball that provides durability and closely mimics natural grass. We are proud to dedicate the softball field to Carol Brown.

At the new complex, coaches and players will enjoy true collegiate dugouts complete with bathrooms, while fans will be able to view games from fixed-back seating with state-of-the-art lighting and hear play-by-play commentary via a high-quality announcement system. For those who cannot attend games in-person, the complex also offers new streaming capabilities. We are proud to dedicate the baseball field to Commander Robert Bentley.

Honoring Carol Brown!

A special thanks to Rep. Matthew Gambill (15th District) for speaking about the important role the late Carol Brown had in the Cartersville community, especially in education, and about her husband Clarence Brown who was in attendance and who has also been a pillar in Bartow County.

Honoring Commander Robert Bentley!

A special thanks to museum director Seth Hopkins for detailing the incredible life of Commander Bentley and his continuous impact on our Cartersville community. Georgia Highlands College is proud to be a community-focused institution, where 84% of our graduates stay and build their careers locally. Recognizing community champions like Carol Brown and Commander Bentley underscores our commitment to the region and inspires us all to contribute more to the place we call home.

MLB World Series Winning Pitcher Mark Wohlers

We were happy to host Mark Wohlers on October 20, as well. Mark was a relief pitcher for Atlanta Braves during the 1995 World Series. He is the third fastest recorded pitcher in baseball history, having thrown a pitch recorded at 103 miles per hour in 1995. Mark was happy to meet everyone, sign some memorabilia and see our student-athletes in action.

A Huge THANKS to the GHC Staff!

With over 250 in attendance, it wouldn’t be possible to do events like this without our incredible GHC staff. Over the course of the day, we held a dedication ceremony, softball bingo, a home run derby, inflatables, games, food trucks, and more. From our facilities team to our IT team to everyone in between, THANK YOU for a wonderful community event.
