The Foundation Camp for boys age 10 through 14 returns on July 10 at Georgia Highlands College (GHC). Applications for the long-running camp are now being accepted.
The camp, which is one of several partnerships between the 100 Black Men of Rome-Northwest Georgia and Georgia Highlands College, is funded by generous donors and the GHC Foundation, giving students the opportunity to attend the camp free of charge, including transportation and a breakfast and lunch.
The camp will run from July 10 through July 21 (with no camp on Saturday or Sunday).
Camp organizers stated Foundation Camp focuses on “foundations in athletics, academics, brotherhood, self-respect and higher education.”
“We hope that Foundation Camp offers two weeks of fun for the campers, but the actual value of Foundation Camp is beyond words,” Foundation Camp Director, GHAME Coordinator and Brother 2 Brother Assistant Director Evan Snelling said. “It provides campers the opportunity to spend quality time on a college campus, to work with college student counselors and begin to build a rapport with them, to expand academic knowledge by engaging in courses taught by college professors, and to continue developing as young men by participating in leadership development and essential skills sessions.”
There is no charge to attend Foundation Camp.
“As director, I hope all campers leave the camp more familiar with college and the importance of education,” Snelling said. “I believe the life lessons taught at the camp are values that will follow the campers as they continue to progress in life.”
Camp days begin at 8AM and conclude at 2:45PM each weekday. Transportation within Rome will be provided with buses beginning their routes at 7AM.
