GHC Personal Appearance and Attire Guidelines

Employees are to present a professional, business-like image to students, prospective students, visitors, and the public at all times. Workplace attire and grooming must be neat, clean, and appropriate. If employees have any questions about the guidelines for apparel, they should discuss them with their immediate supervisor.

Georgia Highlands College guidelines for appropriate attire Mondays through Thursdays are as follows;

  • Casual shirts: All shirts with collars, business casual crew-neck or V-neck shirts, blouses, and golf and polo shirts. Examples of inappropriate shirts include T-shirts, shirts with slogans or graphics of any sort, tank tops, muscle shirts, spaghetti strap or strapless tops, camouflage, and crop tops. GHC logo shirts are permissible provided they are clean and neat.
  • Dresses:  Dresses are permissible.  Examples of inappropriate dresses include mini dresses, strapless/spaghetti strap, tight-fitting, low-cut, etc
  • Pant/Skirts: Casual slacks, trousers, jeans, and skirts without holes, frays, etc. Examples of inappropriate pants/skirts includes shorts, skorts, camouflage, and pants/skirts worn below the waist or hip line.
  • Footwear: Casual slip-on or tie shoes, dress sandals, and clean athletic shoes. Examples of inappropriate footwear include basic beach-style flip flops.

Professional dress is always allowable and highly encouraged when there are USG and associated dignitary visits.

Those departments that require uniforms must adhere to the assigned uniform standards.  Employees may request an exception to the guidelines when there is a compelling reason, for example, a medical condition or religious belief. Any employee seeking accommodation for the attire guidelines should contact the Office of Human Resources. GHC will reasonably accommodate an employee in workplace attire unless the accommodation creates an undue hardship or safety concern. Departments may determine an exception to the guidelines and allow staff to dress more casually for specific reasons. Employees must present a neat and clean appearance.

Any staff member who does not meet the guidelines will be required to take corrective action, for example, leaving the premises to change clothing. Hourly-paid staff does not receive compensation for any work time missed because of failure to comply with designated workplace standards. Supervisors will be responsible for determining the appropriateness of attire. Employees who repeatedly disregard the guidelines are subject to disciplinary action.
