Both GHC teams were in action Wednesday against Central Georgia Technical College.
In the first game of the night, the Lady Chargers controlled the game from the outset and cruised to a 64-52 victory over the visiting Lady Titans. In the first half, Nijeria Jordan (12 points) and Jahnaria Brown (11 points) help GHC open a 13-point lead at the end of the first half, leading 36-23. The second half was more of the same, at the Lady Chargers would open up a 21-point lead in the 3rd quarter. Central Georgia was able to mount a small comeback in the 4th quarter but it was too late. At the final buzzer, the Lady Chargers had prevailed 64-52.
For the game, GHC was led by Jahnaria Brown with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Nijeria Jordan added 17, while Janee Knorr and Sasha Shishkina both chipped in 9 points. Knorr also grabbed 7 rebounds and Sandra Lin dished out 6 assists. Laurie Thomas had a stellar game for the Lady Titans with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
The win improves the Lady Chargers’ record to 13-8 overall and 9-2 in the GCAA. The team returns to action this Saturday, February 1 at the Corral against Andrew College. Tip-off is at 2:00PM.
The men’s game figured to be a closer affair from the start. While the Chargers currently sit atop the GCAA standings at 7-0, the Titans are only a game back at 6-1. Central Georgia is also the two-time defending GCAA champs and are the team GHC has to beat if they intend to bring the GCAA title back to the Corral.
The game did not start off well for the home team. The visiting Titans started the game with the hot hand, shooting almost 52% from the floor to GHC’s 42%. This allowed Central Georgia to open an 18-point lead with a little over 6 minutes left in the first half. However, the Chargers were able to fight back over the last 6 minutes to pull within 4 at the half, 35-39.
The second half turned in to a game of spurts between the two teams. Multiple times Central Georgia was able to push their lead to double-digits only to see GHC fight back to cut the lead to less than 6. Unfortunately for the home team, in the end the Chargers could not overcome those early struggles and were never able to catch the visitors as GHC fell to the Titans, 66-71.
The Chargers starters struggled for the game with no player in double-figures. Cahiem Brown (20 points), Langston Wilson (12 points), and RJ Campbell (9 points) led the Chargers coming off the bench. While GHC’s leading scorer, Trevin Wade, struggled from the floor, going just 2-11, including 0-6 from three, he was able to grab a game-high 11 rebounds and nab 5 steals, another game-high.
The loss drops the Chargers to 16-5 overall and 7-1 in the GCAA conference. The men return to action on Saturday, February 1 when they travel to Cuthbert, GA to take on Andrew College.
